Our PaySimply rating: 2.7 stars

We’ve given PaySimply 2.7 stars for a few reasons, including that it’s a well-trusted service in Canada, recommended for paying your income taxes, among other things. It also has a wide variety of payment options you can take advantage of, including with cash or debit cards. Its payment limits are also quite high, giving you increased simplicity and flexibility in your payments. Finally, it’s 100% Canadian, designed by and for Canadians, giving you access to a large number of Canadian payees, without having to jump through any extra hoops.

PaySimply loses a few points because it doesn’t have any sign-up incentives or welcome bonuses, and it charges fees for every transaction you make through the service, which ultimately costs you money.

Rating methodology

To calculate our Genius Ratings, we compare the features of the account or product in question with other similar products in Canada. We give each feature a score out of 5 based on that comparison. Once we’ve rated all the features, we run them through our proprietary algorithm to produce a final rating out of 5.

What's good about PaySimply

So, what does PaySimply have going for it?

Pros

pro Wide variety of payment options

PaySimply allows you to pay most bills with your credit card, debit card, cash, Interac e-Transfer, PayPal, and more. Not all payment options are available for all payees, but it provides a significant amount of flexibility you would otherwise not have access to.

pro Able to use PaySimply to pay almost any bill, including your taxes

You can use PaySimply to pay a wide variety of bills, including your income taxes and property taxes. In fact, it’s accepted as a payment option by the Canadian Revenue Agency, so you can be sure that your payment is accepted by that organization.

pro Relatively high transaction limits

Where some third-party payment systems have awkward low transaction limits, PaySimply has relatively high limits for most payment types. Unless you have significantly high bills for most things, you should be able to pay them easily using PaySimply.

pro Reasonable fees for using the service

PaySimply fees range from 1% for Interac e-Transfers to 2.5% for most other options. Of course, any added fees are money out of your pocket, these fees are relatively reasonable, given the flexibility they allow. And if you pay with cash or debit at a Canada Post outlet, you’ll be charged a flat fee ranging from $3.95 to $7.95.

pro Secure and trusted system

PaySimply is a trusted system that’s accepted by the government of Canada for paying your bills, including any outstanding payments to the CRA (such as income taxes). While no online system is 100% reliable, PaySimply has been used successfully by Canadians for years, and has been shown to be secure and reliable. PaySimply does not store any of your personal or payment information in its systems, giving you peace of mind if their systems are ever compromised.

pro Both desktop and mobile support

You can use PaySimply on both desktop and mobile devices, allowing you to use whatever method you’re most comfortable with.

pro Designed for and by Canadians

Because PaySimply is designed specifically for and by Canadians, it supports a huge variety of Canadian payees without you having to do anything special to ensure your bill payments get where they’re supposed to be.

What to watch out for with PaySimply

But no third-party system is perfect. PaySimply does have a couple of drawbacks to keep in mind.

Cons

con Fees for all payment types

Like any third-party system, PaySimply charges a fee to use its service, regardless of which payment method you choose. While it does give you added flexibility, you’ll be dinged for service fees that you would not otherwise pay if you use a more traditional payment method.

con No rewards or other incentives to use the service

Unlike some competitors, PaySimply does not offer any rewards programs or other incentives for using its service.

Best alternatives to PaySimply

PaySimply does have competing services, of course. Let’s see how it stacks up to 2 of them.

I have been using this service to pay my taxes for a couple of years. All has been good until I made an error with a payment. I contacted PaySimply within 13 minutes after the error was made, which my bank recommended. I was put on hold for nearly 45 minutes. I was given a reference number and was told that they would correct the error. I was assured that it could be done and that it would show on my credit card in one to two weeks. After 22 days I finally called them back as no adjustment was showing. Three calls later I'm basically told there was a communication error on their end and unfortunately the payment went through. I now have to contact the provider. I have spent an hour and a half on the phone trying to get a simple correction done with PaySimply. Poor communication on their part. I would hesitate to use them again because their customer service is deplorable.
