soNomad is relatively new to the insurance market, but it's gaining popularity for its broad range of coverage options and easy purchasing process. Whether you’re a student, seasoned traveller, or just looking for basic coverage on your next out-of-province trip, you can find the travel insurance you need.

However, soNomad doesn't offer coverage for all Canadians quite yet. It also specifically states that it won't cover high-risk vacation activities, such as skydiving and spelunking.

soNomad product rating: 4.9 stars

While soNomad is a relative newcomer, it has a lot to offer Canadian travellers. We've gone through the process of getting a test quote from many different insurance providers, but soNomad's system was by far the easiest and fastest we've ever encountered. Combine this with their low prices and range of coverage options, and you've got an impressive service with impressive products that should have no trouble competing in the travel insurance sphere.

Yes, there are still some kinks and quirks to be worked out. But these issues will likely be addressed over time.

Rating methodology

To evaluate travel insurance, we analyze over 15 data points to generate a trustworthy Genius Rating. We consider all aspects of a travel insurance policy, including the premium, trip cancellation coverage, burglary and loss protection, customer satisfaction, and rental car coverage, to assess its overall value. Then, the travel insurance policy’s features are rated based on how they stack up against other available options.

The pros of soNomad

This newcomer to the travel insurance scene has a lot to offer and a lot to like. Take a look:

Pros

proUp to 25% cheaper than other travel insurance on average

Typical insurance brokers can have high commission fees (sometimes up to 25%), but soNomad charges a minimum fee instead. They claim that this saves their clients an average of up to 25%, and our test quoted came out at about 17% cheaper than TD, which is pretty close. They also don't charge anything for changing your travel dates, which is a refreshing change from the usual service and admin fees from other providers.

proEasy-to-use online quote system

We ran a few test quotes and found that soNomad's online quote system is incredibly easy to use and provides fast results. Minimal questions are asked, so it really just takes a few clicks, and you're presented with several different plan options, tiered by the extent of coverage you prefer. Each quote provides detailed information about the individual plan, helping you make an informed decision.

proUnique plans for visitors to Canada

Those planning a visit to Canada will find that soNomad offers some valuable options. Super visa holders, future Canadian residents, workers waiting for insurance benefits to begin, and international students can all get coverage and enjoy peace of mind.

The cons of soNomad

There are still a few things to be wary of with soNomad, though. Here are a few details we noticed:

Cons

conSome areas of Canada are left out

While all Canadians can use and get quotes from soNomad, once you select a package to purchase, you'll notice some fine print mentioning that some coverages aren't available in all provinces and territories. So you might be disappointed when you try to purchase what you thought was the perfect plan.

conHigh-risk adventure activities are excluded

Thrill seekers should read the terms and conditions, as many popular activities aren’t covered. These include scuba diving (to a depth of 60 feet), white-water rafting or water skiing, motor sports, piloting classes, skydiving, hot-air ballooning, and more.

FAQ

What is soNomad insurance?

soNomad is a Quebec-based company that offers different types of travel insurance coverage. They provide an easy-to-use online quote system, offer tiered packages for surprisingly low prices, and reward customers for planning early for their insurance needs.

Is soNomad insurance legit?

Yes, soNomad is a legit travel insurance provider. They've been in business since 2019 and operate out of Montreal, Quebec. Some of their products include medical insurance and trip insurance, including coverage for travel accidents, flight delays, and more.

What makes soNomad a good option?

soNomad's low, competitive pricing, unique plans, preseason rates, and user-friendly online quote system make it a solid choice for travel insurance. Unfortunately, coverage isn't available for residents of all provinces and territories so be sure to check this.

How do I contact soNomad?

You can get in touch with soNomad by calling 1-888-815-7472 or emailing customer service at [email protected]. You can also visit the soNomad website and fill out the form on the contact page to have a representative contact you.

Is soNomad a Canadian company?

Yes, soNomad is a Canadian company with headquarters in Montreal. However, an American conglomerate, Berkshire Hathaway, underwrites the insurance offered through soNomad. This means that while soNomad is Canadian-based, the insurance backing comes from a U.S. provider.

Who offers the best travel medical insurance in Canada?

The best travel medical insurance largely depends on whether you want to work with your current bank or purchase specialized coverage. TD Travel Insurance, World Nomads, Medipac, and more all made our list of the best travel insurance.

very disappointed
Easy To Use
At the outset their phone system separates age groups.....over 50 dial 1 or 2....the person answering is not an agent, but she will dig further into your age group and length of trip....( I don't think they are advanced enough to have AI phone capabilities yet, so I am assuming I was speaking to a human person....Then you are told you will have call back sometime during the day, and of course they are very busy, so they can't confirm an approximate time line..... I called this morning around 9 a.m. and it is now 5.45 p.m. Silence....I am a retired insurance broker, 73 years old, and this pisses me off to the extreme....SoNo Mad....., "YES Mad".... Also, Travel Insurance Policies and their providers need to be regulated similar to other types of insurance in our country/province. Standard policy wording must be required by all players. Until that happens, the majority of people buying this product from any provider is at great risk.....This is not the way insurance should work.....Solution?......Maybe our provincial government insurance providers should offer a top up product that WE.... out of country travellers would willingly pay for,...... knowing that you have the weight of YOUR government behind your protection and UNIFORM insurance wording........They could even make this into a profit center like the LCBO etc.........So smarten up Travel Insurance Companies,....this could happen sooner than you think.....Do Not advertise what you don't deliver.....

NO CARD!
Hard To Use
Bought flight insurance (medecal) June 2023 not received a card, flying out to D.R next week if no attendants strike.

Disappointing experience
Disappointing experience with So Nomad insurance broker! I will not consider purchasing from them again. Received an insurance card with a contact number, but when attempting to make a claim for a 48-hour flight delay (resulting in approximately $1000 in lost travel expenses), the process was frustrating. Calling the provided number led to being redirected back to Sonomad customer service. Despite speaking with So Nomad insurance assistance, there was confusion and an inability to initiate the claim
