Ever wondered what an online will service look like if it were designed by actual estate planning lawyers? Epilogue Wills is the brainchild of Daniel Goldgut and Arin Klug, a couple of lawyers who saw a niche market opportunity and decided to go for it.

Epilogue Wills is a solid alternative to traditional lawyers. It's reasonably priced, starting at just $139 and much less time-consuming than the old way of doing things, but still covers all the bases. And it goes beyond a standard fill-in-the-blank experience with a more customized approach just for you.

Our rating for Epilogue Wills: 3.8 stars

It's unlikely that the will writing process could be made any simpler of a process than what Epilogue Wills offers. You get the luxury of an online Will creation platform that you can use in your own home, the assistance of experienced lawyers and professionals, and the convenience of having the finished product delivered to your door.

And it's all for a decent price. Customized services like this often cost far more, but Epilogue has kept even its pricing simple.

What's good about Epilogue Wills

Here are a few reasons we think you'll enjoy Epilogue Wills.

Pros

pro More affordable than traditional methods

Online Will creation is, as you'd expect, much cheaper than paying your lawyer's hourly rate, whatever that rate might be. Individuals pay $139 for a simple yet customized Will or $199 for a larger package that includes documents pertaining to possible incapacitation or health care issues – couples pay $269 or $329, respectively, for the same thing. Both options can be updated at any time, at no cost.

pro Saves time and is easy to use

Instead of commuting back and forth to your lawyer's office, this online Will service allows you to do it all from the comfort of your couch – which saves you the cost of gas, plus more. The lowest you'd likely pay for a traditional Will through a lawyer is between $300 or $400. And yes, you can get a simple Will kit for around $50, but the customized service Epilogue Wills provides is just as simple and not that much more expensive.

pro Created by experts in the industry

Since Epilogue's online Will creation process was designed by estate planning lawyers, you can rest assured that all details have been considered. All the included documents are comprehensive, all the proper registration is taken care of, and all legal requirements are met.

pro Create a social media Will

Epilogue Wills' online platform also includes the option of creating a social media Will, which is a way of protecting your various online accounts. You can appoint a trusted friend or family member to take over and follow through with the plan you lay out for how you want your social media and online presence to proceed.

pro First Will platform to let you name a professional trust company as executor

This is now the very first online Will platform that can help its clients name a professional trust company as the Will executor. This means that if you don't have anyone to name as executor, or simply don't want to burden your loved ones with the job, you can name a professional trust company instead, such as RBC Royal Trust. Not only is Epilogue Wills the first, but it is also currently the only online Will creation site that's able to offer this service.

What to watch out for with Epilogue Wills

Although Epilogue has a lot of hits, there are still a few misses to address.

Cons

con Not appropriate for those with complicated finances

If you have a long list of assets, estranged family members, or an otherwise complicated financial situation, an online Will might not be right for you. The services provided by Epilogue Wills are fairly basic and don't leave room for many complications. It's nice for saving money on Will creation, but there are some factors a service like this simply can't account for.

con Information centre isn't all that helpful

Yes, Epilogue does have a page containing helpful information on different aspects of Will creation, but there's no search function to be found. If you're looking for an answer to a specific question, it can be hard to get what you need. There's not even a library of article titles for you to skim through.

con Unavailable in certain provinces

Unfortunately, Epilogue doesn't yet provide Will creation services for residents of Quebec, Yukon, Northwest Territories, or Nunavut. However, social media Will creation is open to anyone in any Canadian province. It's only recently that Epilogue Wills began offering services to New Brunswick residents, so it's entirely possible that Quebec and the territories will be included at a later date.

Best alternatives to Epilogue Wills

Epilogue Wills is a unique product, but it does have competition. Take a look at how it compares.

Epilogue Wills frequently asked questions

What's the best online will platform?

The best online will platform will be the one that provides the services you need at a price you can afford – and no one else can make that call but you. Epilogue Wills offers a platform built by industry professionals and services for reasonable prices, but this or any other online will-building option may not work for you if you have complicated family or personal finance details.

Can I make an online will in Canada?

Yes, there are several options for creating online wills in Canada, and Epilogue Wills is one of the top choices. You can read about Epilogue's features here and see how it stacks up against the competition here.

What does it cost to create Wills online with Epilogue Wills?

The cost depends on what type of Will you need. If you're creating this for yourself, you can build a basic Will for $139 or a Will plus various incapacity documents for $199. And if you're part of a couple and are creating this for both of you, the basic Will package is $269 and the Will plus incapacity documents is $329.

Is Epilogue Wills legit?

It absolutely is! Epilogue Wills was built by two experienced Canadian estate lawyers, who saw a way to make the process of setting up your will easier for Canadians across the country.

Can I get an online Will kit from Epilogue Wills?

No, the Epilogue Wills platform is one where you create your Will by answering questions and filling out online forms, not with any type of kit. This makes for a much more customized product, which is not what you'd get with a Will kit. Click here to see the perks that Epilogue can offer.

Is Epilogue Wills secure?

All of your data with Epilogue Wills is encrypted and stored on secure Canadian servers. Payments are processed securely by Stripe.

Are there free online Will services?

There are no free platforms for building an online Will. And while you may find some free DIY Will kits in Canada, there can be hidden fees involved, including access to your documents after the 1-week trial is over. You'll also have limited support during the process if any at all. Alternatively, here are various ways that you'll benefit from an online Will through Epilogue Wills.

Super easy to use!
Step-by-step, simple, with clear instructions. Took under 10 mins and I have a legal will (once two witnesses watch me sign)
