Opening and closing a TD bank account

Whether you're opening or closing a TD bank account, there are steps to follow.

How to open a TD account

Opening a TD bank account requires a process that's fairly standard with all banks, beginning with choosing the account you want and ending with depositing funds.

    • Step 1: Research the account options, consider your needs, and choose the best fit.
    • Step 2: Gather your documentation. This can include a Canadian passport, driver's license, SIN, and/or birth certificate.
    • Step 3: Fill out and submit an application, either online, over the phone, or in person at a bank branch. This process can take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes.
    • Step 4: Deposit funds into your new account.

    How to close TD account

If you want to close your TD bank account, follow these steps:

    • Step 1: Ensure you have another account elsewhere that you can use to manage your funds.
    • Step 2: Pay any fees you owe and redirect any automatic payments that come from the account you're closing.
    • Step 3: Move your funds into your other account.
    • Step 4: Visit a bank branch or call customer service and request the account be closed. It may be possible to do this online, but it's not a common option.
    • Step 5: It can take a few days or even weeks for TD to complete the process, so check back regularly until you see that the account has successfully been closed.

    Why we like TD Bank

TD Bank is an excellent choice for Canadians who prefer to work with a big, well-established bank and who make frequent transactions while they're out and about. TD's suite of chequing accounts offers exceptional value and convenience that can't be denied.

However, TD falls a bit short in the savings account category. The only real benefit of them vs. your online banking options is the convenience of keeping everything under one roof, so to speak, as it's easier to transfer money.

    FAQ

Which TD savings account is the best?

The TD Every Day Savings Account is the top savings account you can get from TD Bank. There's no monthly fee, one free transaction per month, and you can use TD's autosave feature for effortless additions to your nest egg.

What is the minimum balance required for a TD chequing account?

There isn't a minimum balance required for opening a TD chequing account, nor is there such a requirement for their savings accounts. However, minimum balance requirements to have the monthly account fee waived range from $2,000 to $5,000.

Is there a free TD chequing account?

The TD Student Chequing Account and the U.S. Daily Interest Chequing Account are the only accounts from TD that don't charge a monthly fee, but fees for other accounts can often be waived by maintaining a minimum balance.

Does TD offer the first home savings account (FHSA)?

Yes, TD offers a first home savings account as one of its registered savings plans. This is a tax-free savings account that can help your nest egg grow as you set aside funds for a downpayment on your first home.

How do I avoid TD Bank monthly fees?

Most TD savings accounts don't charge a monthly fee, but clients can have their monthly fees waived on chequing accounts by maintaining a certain balance. This balance can be anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000.

How to get $300 from TD Bank?

The current TD welcome bonuses offer as much as $450 for opening a new chequing account, plus another $100 if you also open a new savings account and TD credit card. These offers change every few months.

I deposited 166,000 into my joint account on Nov. 17th, I understand the 5 day hold. The hold started on the 18th, so the 5 business days would be up on the 24th, but the teller replied I couldn't transfer the funds for my new house until the 25th. 5 business days is the 24th, is it not? the closing date is the 27th of November. Hey D, thanks for pointing this out! Looks like the sentence was a bit vague – we meant that you don't have to get a notification every time. I have added in your additional info so it's more clear. Thanks again.
