CAA Auto Insurance product rating: 3.7 stars

CAA is a trusted name and membership can be well worth it thanks to services like roadside assistance and towing. CAA Auto Insurance scores well thanks to quality features and comprehensive coverage options, and the member discounts are certainly noteworthy. If you're a CAA member, its auto insurance should be at the top of your consideration list.

However, while CAA Auto Insurance is available Canada-wide, the CAA membership details vary by province/territory. And while the base price is competitive, appealing add-ons can significantly increase your bill.

Rating methodology

The pros of CAA Auto Insurance

This insurance product has a lot to offer Canadians, both in terms of coverage and value:

Pros

Comprehensive, customizable insurance

CAA Auto Insurance is highly customizable, allowing you to specify the options you want (such as rental car insurance), the level of coverage you need, or the deductible you prefer. This kind of customization can go a long way towards making you feel satisfied and comfortable with what you pay for.

Competitive pricing

Having received a number of quotes from different car insurance companies, CAA Auto Insurance was among the most competitive. It wasn't the cheapest, mind you, but it also wasn't the most expensive. And given that you can pile on a few discounts, CAA has some serious value to offer.

Discounts galore

This product offers an array of possible discounts that can reduce the overall cost of your car insurance. These include discounts for bundling your home insurance and auto insurance, using winter tires, insuring multiple vehicles, participating in CAA Connect, and being a CAA Member.

CAA membership benefits

A CAA membership earns you a 20% discount on CAA Auto Insurance. Aside from the usual insurance benefits, this membership provides access to free roadside assistance, towing, membership discounts on a variety of products and services, and access to CAA's rewards program.

The cons of CAA Auto Insurance

There are, of course, some downsides that you should be aware of:

Cons

Poor customer service and response times

Many customers are dissatisfied with CAA Auto Insurance's customer service and response times. Take negative reviews with a grain of salt, though – angry people tend to vent on the internet more than people who are happy with the service they receive.

Customization can cost you

While add-ons and customization can be convenient, the costs can be considerable. CAA Auto Insurance offers many discounts, but most involve purchasing additional insurance, getting a membership, or buying a set of proper winter tires. You'll need to be careful that creating your ideal insurance product doesn't break the bank.

Service varies between provinces

Even as a Canadian institution with provincial clubs, discounts and offerings will be slightly different depending on where you’re located. For example, CAA Connect (and its rewards) is only available in Ontario.

Cheap premiums for a reason, terrible claims process and poor payouts
2 Claims... I should have learned after the first one. I had been involved with insurance claims for almost 20 years in a previous occupation, and CAA has been the absolute worst company that I have ever dealt with... which is saying a lot after having to deal with State Farm for years!!! On my 2 personal claims over the past year and a half (ice falling on my car in my driveway and a transport truck swerving into my wife on the highway), they tried constantly to shaft me on my vehicle's value and were caught in multiple outright lies, not only by me but also by the Ombudsman that I had to involve. Yes, they are cheaper, and that is great if you never have to make a claim.... but if you do, bring your own lube, you're gonna need it! Even after coming to an agreement on both claims AND having video evidence of both which proved us 100% not at fault, they STILL tried to screw me out of thousands of dollars when it came time to pay out. And the delays!!!! OMG, the delays!!!! The first claim, a simple comprehensive claim, took over 3 months and they still never issued a cheque for the less than market value that they told me they were paying me. They also continued to charge me for the car in my monthly payments, which they agreed to refund, but never did. This second claim is over 2 months old, with dash cam evidence, police and witness statements backing my wife being in no way at fault, and they still want a $500 deductible payment and denied us a car rental. Their escalation department didn't investigate anything and were surprised when I informed them that there was dash cam footage and a witness statement on the police report... something that was passed on to the claims adjuster but that the escalation department didn't bother with as they had no intention of changing their minds even if the facts proved them wrong. It took legal action threats to finally get the not at fault finding, but as I said, they are still demanding the deductible and raising my rates.

Horrible unprofessional service.
CAA insurance is a waste of time. online they quoted me 115.00 a month on line, which is $50.00 less that what I will be paying. I thought GREAT!! I will call them right away! Then I get on the phone with a woman with a thick accent, working from home.. I knew this because her kid was screaming in the back ground with banging noise, and she had to keep muting the line to block out the back ground noise. I asked her if she was working in the CAA office and she confirmed that she was working from home. So after all the questions she asked me. ( most were the same questions I had already answered online) the quote went up 44.00 a month from the quote they gave on line.

Do not trust CAA
I called the claim department to put a claim through for a windshield replacement on my leased BMW to find out that my policy doesn’t cover OEM windshield, contacted my broker and told him I will pay out of my pocket this time but I need to change insurance company. My broker called back and told me I do have coverage for OEM parts! I had fix the windshield but called CAA and asked the claim department to tell me if I can get reimbursed for my paid replacement, she first said “you do not have coverage “ and as I mentioned I have a leased vehicle and they expect me to replace the windshield with the original part and that my broker told me I have coverage, suddenly the rude lady told me you have a leased car so ask the manufacturer to send us an estimate and then we will look at it and you can replace the windshield with an original one! These guys try not to pay for your claims first and I believe this is their policy. Will cancel at the end of my term.

Run Away from CAA
Hard To Use
Homeowners should know about this. CAA cancelled my house insurance with minimal notice due to the cast iron plumbing system in my house. According to my broker, they no longer insure homes with cast iron. Guess you have to have the big bucks to own a newer home and be insured by CAA.

Damn Thieves
Would give zero with how much grief they have caused me. Missed my payment date (I admit that it was irresponsible on my part for being short a few cents) but paid a couple of days later. The system had already generated a first notice and stated I must pay firsr and last again by a certain date. Once again paid my previous balance that I missed and the remaining balance before their requested date and they attempted to take another payment on the actual day my insurance was due. Had to conract my broker once again to deal with issue for them to generate a second notice when balance was already paid off. They never hold themselves accountable. Finally thought it was sorted out only to find out they cancelled me, they did not notify me that I was to pay an additional $20 on top of my regular paymemt. Again they were at fault for nor clearing their system when I made the previous payment ahead of time as I was instructed to do via their letter. Honestly I have road side as well and may cancel that with how they operate.
