Why pay to stream shows when you can watch free internet TV? Network websites like CTV and Global News, and streaming services like Pluto and Tubi, give you access to high-quality content without paying the price of cable or subscription services.

Many websites and streaming services are tailored to specific types of programming, and the guide below explains which options are best for each type of content. It also covers how easily accessible the content is, which subscription-based platforms offer free trials, and more.

How to get free internet TV

To get started, all you need is a computer with internet that’s capable of streaming video.

But if you don’t want to be hunched over your computer every time you watch one of your favourite shows, here are some components that can really improve your experience.

1. High-speed internet connection

This is essential for fluid playback and for playing HD content.

You’re going to want at least 5 Mbps, but more speed is always better to reduce loading times, improve stream quality, and support multiple streams at the same time.

You’ll also need unlimited bandwidth (or a high bandwidth cap) to make sure you aren’t dinged with crazy overage fees.

2. HDMI cable

In the past, when HDMI cables cost $100 or more, no one plugged their computers into their TVs.

Doing so is much more common now, mostly because you can pick up an HDMI cable almost anywhere for a very reasonable price. They even sell them at Dollarama for around $3 each.

The only time you might need higher bandwidth or top-quality cable is if you want to fully leverage your 4K TV, or if you have a very long cable run (more than 25ft).

3. HDMI-capable streaming device

Usually, we recommend a dedicated Home Theatre PC (HTPC) as the ultimate device for free internet TV, but setting one up can be both overwhelming and expensive for people who are new to streaming.

Here are a few options so you can choose what works for you based on your comfort level:

Easy setup

If you want a small, easy-to-use, and inexpensive device to get your feet wet streaming, I'd recommend the Amazon Fire TV Stick.

It gives you lots of streaming apps to get started, including Netflix (but you won’t be able to stream everything from Canadian network sites like you can with an HTPC).

It only costs about $50, comes with an easy-to-use remote, and it’s basically plug-and-play.

Intermediate setup

A good compromise between a full HTPC with Windows and a limited streaming device is an Android TV box.

If you buy a higher-end box, you can do mostly the same things as with a Windows HTPC, but with the benefit of the huge library of apps on the Google Play Store.

The downside is that some Canadian network sites block Android devices from accessing their streaming video content via mobile web browsers. Still, several bigger networks all have apps that work just fine.

Existing setup

If you’re not ready to buy a dedicated device just yet, most laptops, many tablets, some phones, and video game consoles can connect to your TV and stream video.

If you plan to use an existing computer, tablet, or phone, a Google Chromecast for wireless casting to your TV is a super convenient way to go.

Pros and cons of free internet TV

Let's take a look at a few more of the benefits and downsides of free online TV:

ProsCons
  • It’s 100% free, legal, and supports content creators
  • Watch shows on your own schedule, not the TV’s schedule
  • Pause, restart, rewind, and fast forward as you please (no PVR required)
  • Whole seasons and past seasons of shows are sometimes available
  • Shorter and often less frequent commercial breaks
  • Shows are often available in 720p or 1080p HD
  • Many networks have movies available, too, including made-for-TV movies
  • Getting everything set up the first time can be a hassle (though this guide makes it easy)
  • Even with a proper HTPC remote and good software, controlling internet TV is a little harder
  • Videos sometimes skip, freeze, or have a grainy quality, although this is the exception, not the rule
  • You can’t really "channel surf" with internet TV
  • Specific content can be harder to find
  • Certain content, like live sports, is rarely available online, although this is improving all the time: read our guide on sports streaming here
  • Many leading providers put the majority of content behind a paywall

The future of internet TV? Best streaming services

Instead of paying for channels you never watch, choosing subscription services can help you save money. This way, you can pay closer to $20 per month for one or two services that you actually use and love, rather than 1600 cable channels to get lost in.

Here's a quick look at some of your options right now in Canada:

If you already have Amazon Prime, one of the major perks you may not be taking advantage of is Amazon Prime Video. This competitive video streaming platform hosts plenty of movies and TV content, including its own original content.

For additional monthly fees, you can get add-on channels to expand your library. You can also buy or rent movies on the platform. Though convenient, these options can get expensive fast.

The best part? This comes as part of your standard $9.99 monthly Amazon Prime fee (though many titles are behind additional paywalls).

Though Disney owns a lot more than the rights to iconic children's movies, Disney+ is still the best choice for someone who is family-centred (or at least loves Disney movies).

For a starting price of $8.99 per month, you can get access to content from these creators and many others:

  • Disney
  • Pixar
  • Star
  • Marvel
  • National Geographic

Best for relationship, food, and home reno content: Discovery+

If you love watching 90 Day Fiancé or one of the many home renovation shows on HGTV, Discovery+ will be a gold mine for you.

If you love food and house shows, you'll find many options at your fingertips. It’s also great for those with curious minds, with prime access to Planet Earth, Battlebots, and, of course, Shark Week.

Here are the Discovery+ pricing tiers:

  • $5.99 per month with ads
  • $9.99 with no ads

As one of the cheapest options on the list, this newcomer to Canadian TV streaming is an interesting choice.

Watch American Netflix and American networks in Canada

You should have plenty of content to watch across all the Canadian networks listed above, but there’s even more available south of the border. Just like Canada, several networks offer full-length episodes on their own websites. In fact, a lot more American networks offer this than Canadian ones.

The U.S. also has two other big advantages over us when it comes to entertainment: American Netflix and Hulu.

Hulu is an alternative for streaming live TV and on-demand shows. It has a user-friendly website and super cheap plans supported by ads (removing the ads makes it more expensive). Unfortunately, it's not available in Canada.

In the past, U.S. Netflix offered more content than Canadian Netflix, but that’s no longer the case. Some estimates claim there are about 6,700 movies and TV shows available on Canadian Netflix, compared with around 6,100 on American Netflix.

Hey Stephen, thanks for updating this page. Love how you care and protect Canadian creators - writers, producers, crew, directors, editors, all of the people who have jobs in the industry! These are people who work 16 hr days, often with no promise for future work but love the jobs they do. Thank you for not advocating for obvious illegal content. But I wanted to mention that using VPNs to access American content (ie. Netflix) does hurt creators. Netflix (US) brokers deals with creators for certain areas to watch, so if Canadians watch the US content, and don't watch it once it finally makes it to Canada, Netflix Canada cuts it due to low subscriptions and then is more cautious making future deals for Canadians. It ends up hurting the creators and Canadians. Creators are the ones who made everyone's lives much better during Covid and beyond, so pay them their due respect. Thanks!

I read your article and got onto bestbuy.ca and purchased an Amazon Fire Stick. Sure hope this works as I am sick and tired of letting the cable provider dictate what I can watch. I do not watch a lot of television but what I get is repeats of channels and really only watch about six altogether. Why am I paying for 44? I think you have led me into a better decision.

CTV does NOT provide free online TV. You have to login. For a majority of their current content you have to login.... with one of your cable provider ID's. Not the same. Sure there is a bunch of old stuff they will let you stream but people who are looking to stream TV are typically looking for current shows and episodes not just all the old stuff. You should separate your list into what is truly free (or cheap) vs which ones will give you a little taste but require you to use a "cable" (Bell, Rogers, et al) login to get the rest.

Hey Rick, Yes, most of the providers listed here have locked their content – which is what the "unlocked" column is meant to indicate. As this is an ever-evolving topic, CTV has recently changed their streaming to be locked. We are planning on updating this article soon.

Hi, I recently purchased a Fire Stick and started viewing TV for free. You seem to have done plenty of research and I am hoping you might be able to answer a couple of questions. First, I appreciate the information you've provided for different channels available to watch for free, legally. Do you know of any services available for either free or low cost that are legal to watch, in Canada, and where you can get a variety of channels? I guess more specifically I am talking something like IPTV. I have found some services but my concern is what are the chances of getting in legal trouble? Also, do you recommend a VPN, if so, any free or what do you recommend? Thank you for your time,

You can get live shows from the networks themselves just by going to their websites (so CTV in your case). They also have them on YouTube. Just need internet and it's all free. To wirelessly see your computer screen on your TV use the "cast" option in YouTube or your laptop settings. Or plug your laptop into your TV with an HDMI Cable (look on the TV remote, or on the TV itself, for the "source" button to find the HDMI outlet you're plugged into, like HDMI 1, HDMI 2, HDMI 3, etc). It's super simple. I do use a wireless mouse as a remote when I use this set up.

Hello Michelle, Unfortunately when you go the easier route for Free Internet TV, you tend to have less flexibility. The channels mentioned in our table at the top are watchable from your computer browser – that's where they were tested. But hardware that is more controlled, like the Fire TV stick, may have more restrictions. Have you tried going to the HGTV site directly in the browser app? That may fix your problem. Hope this helps!

I wouldn't like Global and UFC would be nice. I am in Ontario and have Netflix and prime. I would like American Netflix's as well. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Lisa, thanks for your comment. Though free internet TV gives you a lot of options, if you're looking for something really specific, it may fall short. That's likely the case with UFC. You can sign up for their "Fight Pass" here: https://welcome.ufcfightpass.com/region/canada but it'll cost you about $10 a month. You can also check out Sportsnet Now or TSN Direct and see if they have any UFC streaming. As for Global TV, their official live streaming is still locked behind a cable plan. Finally, we have an article on how to access American Netflix here: https://moneygenius.ca/blog/american-netflix-canada Hope this helps!

I live in Ontario and have a smart tv and would like to cut my cable but I don't want to miss out on the U.S. channels. What can I do?

Hi Daniela, One way around that problem is using a VPN to bypass region blocks put in place by American sites. We link to ExpressVPN in this article, but there are plenty you can try. This can also give you access to American Netflix. Another way is the site ustvgo.tv, which another commenter suggested a few months ago. I've used it myself since then and find it works great. Hope this helps!

Hi, I am heading to Mexico and I want to be able to watch my Canadian Sports channels. I know last year, I was unable to stream the TSN networks, but it want important due to a Satellite dish we had.. however this year new location and no satellite Dish. I have the Windows 10 Laptop, I can get the fire Stick or an android box. the Question is, will they allow me to watch my Canadian content, or am I going to have to get a VPN or something similar to allow it.

Hey David! Yes you'll likely encounter regional restriction problems using your FireTV or Android box. This is because the issue is the Mexican internet connection, not your device. Trying out a VPN will likely be your best bet – just make sure they offer Canadian servers. Depending on how long you're staying in Mexico, you may even be able to take advantage of some 30-day free trial offers.

I found this website where you can watch most of the American channels for free ....some have buffering problems depending on time of day but most are good http://ustvgo.tv/ Hook into your tv with hdmi and go. HDMI does not give you audio (except from speakers on your laptop so might want to hook in external speakers and subwoofer and it sounds great

> HDMI does not give you audio You probably have to use your sound control panel to select the HDMI as the audio output source. That should route the audio to the TV's speakers. The ustvgo.tv site is a good find. I wonder how long it will last.

I own a TabloTV tuner. It works like a BellFibe box, but instead it records over-the-air TV. It can be accessed remotely once you used it when you were at home. So it it is installed at your home in Quebec City, you will be able to tune the 5 local stations (Noovo, TVA, Radio Canada, Télé Québec, Global), record the shows you wish, and listen to real-time and recorded TV from where ever you have Internet access.

note that CBC does stream some live sports - watched game 2 of SL/ Bost. finals on CBC streaming and am planning on watching game 3. They probably stream CFL as well.

For those with a little computer know how, I use a Raspberry Pi. Its a well supported small single board computer with a lot of built in features ideal for streaming boxes. Any one interested can Google it. It does not support Netflix but then, my smart TV does. You install its operating system and then Kodi. There are many plug ins that can be installed that support different channels like the CBC. It is well supported and documented on line.

This may seem the most simpleton of questions. I am furthest from tech savy as is possible to get. Can I just stream to my laptop and watch there until I can manage to learn enough to follow along the rest of the way through to my TV? I have High speed internet and a HDMI laptop, I already stream netfix without difficulty. I Am sure I can, but It begs the question....

Hey Toni,

Yes, you should be able to stream the sites listed here on your laptop no problem! You can even stream on your phone if you'd like :)

Hey Steven: I am a snowbird that has until now relied on Shaw to give me service in the USA. Due to the footprint change I find myself wondering how to get Canadian news, sports, and standard TV programming in California. I have an Android box with KODI already but have not ventured into many apps. Any suggested Apps or setup to replace our lost Shaw satellite? Also are these sites available in the USA as well as Canada or do I need an " unlocator " or VPN type of system to make it look like we are in Canada?

Hello Dennis,

Have you looked into Slingbox? I've heard that works pretty well. And according to their FAQ, you don't need a VPN to watch your Canadian television.

Hope this helps!

I have Samsung smart 4K tv. I am in Montreal. What apps i should download - SmartIPTV or Smart std or stbemu? After that who do I subscribe to for the channel. Thank you

All my husband cares about is his UK/EU soccer (mostly Scottish Leagues and championship games. We have a sports subscription with Rogers for which they charge $20/month (in addition to their obscenely priced cable service) but it is mainly English Leagues or relatively unknown EU teams. Subscribing to Nordvpn only gave us access to pay-per-view premium UK stations for live soccer which is more costly than here in Canada. We are not looking for free or cheap- cheap, we just want to watch ‘live’ soccer matches at a reasonable cost.

Hey Sarah, thanks for writing in.

I did a bit of research and not sure if there's any perfect solutions for you. The best sports streaming service I can find for Canada is SportsNet Now for $19.99 to $27.99 a month. I've read that there are select games available from the Scottish Premiership on this program, but not sure how many and if it would justify the pricetag.

Sorry I couldn't be more help. Canada really needs to step up its sports streaming game.
