Our LoanConnect rating: 3.3 stars

LoanConnect is an easy way to compare your loan options in Canada. The best part about it is that it doesn’t harm your credit score – all they ask for is an estimate of your score and they’ll match you up with lenders based on that. This site is a great place to start if you’re thinking of getting a loan, but you may want to look around more to cover all of your options before committing.

LoanConnect has its score because of its unrestricted Canadian access, plus the wide range of loan types, amounts, and terms. The main reason it falls short is because of the relatively small amount of lenders it lists.

Also if you’re a student, LoanConnect doesn’t appear to offer student loans at this time. You can find more information about government resources for student loans and other financing options here.

What's good about LoanConnect

Here’s what there is to love about LoanConnect.

Pros

pro Free to use

Searching for loans is 100% free and won’t cost you a dime.

pro Loans available for all credit scores

The lenders LoanConnect lists offer loans to people with excellent to poor credit.

pro 12 different types of loans to search for

From debt consolidation to buying a car, there are lots of reasons why you may want to take out a loan right now. With 12 options to choose from (including “other”), you’ll be able to find a loan that fits your situation. Read about the different types of personal loans here.

pro Interest rates as low as 8.99%

One of the most important things to keep an eye on when looking for a loan is the interest rate. If you can find something around the low end of LoanConnect’s 6.99% APR, that’s pretty good for an unsecured loan.

pro Loans available from $500 to $60,000

Depending on what you need it for, it’s always a good idea to only take out what you need. With a wide range of loan amounts available, you can find a loan that can suit even the biggest of needs.

pro No effect on your credit score

Because LoanConnect only asks for an estimate of your credit score, there won’t be a hard credit check on your file – saving you from worrying about any negative impacts on your score. If you choose to go through with a lender, they’ll likely do a soft check which also won’t affect your score. That being said, if they do need to proceed with a hard credit check, you’ll be prompted first and have the chance to back out.

pro Available to all of Canada

Though LoanConnect is based in Ontario, they list no provincial restrictions on who can apply for a loan through their site.

What to watch out for with LoanConnect

But there are some things to keep an eye on as well.

Cons

con Make sure to pay attention to the interest rate

No matter where you get a loan from, it’s always important to make sure the interest rate and term comes out to something you can afford. Otherwise you may find yourself in a bigger hole than you started with.

con Potential for bias in search results

Because LoanConnect is a free service, it makes its money from referrals made to the lenders it lists. This introduces the potential for bias in what they choose to advertise.

con Limited amount of lenders compared

After testing out a couple of searches, we only had a few recommendations based on our situations. With so many lenders out there to compare, LoanConnect likely doesn’t have the rights or partnership required to list them. So be sure to compare against other possible lenders before making a final decision.

Best alternatives to LoanConnect

One of the most important things to talk about with LoanConnect is how good the results are. And the best way to figure that out? Comparing it to other Canadian search engines to see how the results stack up.

So we looked up a $7,500 car loan for someone making $75,000 a year with a good credit score. Here’s what we got from LoanConnect and Smarter Loans, a Canadian alternative.

Smarter Loans gave us 2 results, whereas LoanConnect only got us 1. We’ll use the better option from Smarter Loans in the table below. We’ll also show how much interest we’d pay over the course of our loan, assuming we got the best rate, shortest term, and lowest amount borrowed.

LoanConnect frequently asked questions

Still have some questions?

Is LoanConnect safe and legit?

LoanConnect is an accredited business through the Better Business Bureau and has an A+ rating and 5 star customer reviews. Still, LoanConnect is essentially a loan search engine, so certain companies it shows to you may be less trustworthy. It's important to research the company you end up getting your loan from as well.

What are the location and credit score requirements for LoanConnect loans?

In order to apply through loans on LoanConnect, all you have to be is a Canadian citizen who’s the age of majority of your province (usually 18). The lenders LoanConnect lists accept people with all types of credit scores, ranging from poor to excellent.

Will searching for loans through LoanConnect affect my credit score?

No, LoanConnect’s search only asks for an estimate of your credit score and does not perform a credit check. If you choose to go through with an application, the lender may perform a soft check but this would also not affect your score. If there’s a case where the lender will need to do a hard check, you’ll be notified first and given the chance to drop out. Find out how soft or hard credit checks impact your credit score.
