Sonnet Car Insurance product rating: 4.7 stars

Sonnet Car Insurance is the top option for auto insurance for a reason – actually, for several reasons. It's competitively priced, comprehensive, customizable, and offers several add-ons to provide coverage beyond the basics. Plus, their website is super easy to use, and if it's this easy to request a quote, it's probably pretty easy and convenient to manage your car insurance online once you've purchased a policy.

Sonnet’s downsides lie in their poor customer reviews, consistently pointing out poor customer service and rate hikes. While being fully digital has its perks, Sonnet doesn’t offer their services in every province and may be lacking a personal touch.

The pros of Sonnet Car Insurance

There are plenty of details that make Sonnet Car Insurance appealing. Here are a few of our favourites:

Pros

pro Ticket forgiveness and other perks

Sonnet offers several ways for you to save on your car insurance, including discounts for being claims-free, insuring multiple vehicles, bundling insurance, and more. They also offer ticket forgiveness, accident forgiveness, and other perks – their cancellation calculator can give you a detailed example of the savings you'd get by transferring your insurance over to them.

pro A user-friendly digital experience

Accessing your account on Sonnet’s website, you get information about your car insurance coverage in easy-to-understand terms. Sonnet will also use what information they have about your driving habits to offer tips about how to be a safer driver. This information can also be used to lower your premiums.

pro Fast, precise quotes

Sonnet uses specific information in the quoting process, so that the premium you pay is exactly what was initially quoted. For example, they’ll ask for your driver’s license number as well as specifics about your commute. They also collect up-to-date information on neighbourhoods, like recent claims and crime levels. These things help Sonnet provide a precise quote in minutes.

pro Vroom service bundle and other customization options

Sonnet has some customization built right into the car insurance quote process, allowing customers to add extra coverages to their pre-set packages. Some of the optional coverages include accident and ticket forgiveness, rental extension bundle, and Vroom service bundle. These coverages are explained in plain language and your quote is updated to reflect any changes.

The cons of Sonnet Car Insurance

Here’s a couple of things to consider with Sonnet Car Insurance:

Cons

con Mixed online reviews

If you do a quick Google search for "Sonnet insurance reviews," you’ll notice that there are quite a few people out there who are less than happy with their interactions with Sonnet. You do have to take this with a grain of salt, of course, because their Trustpilot score is rated as a 4 out 5 with over 3,000 reviews. In any case, it’s something you’ll want to research before making a final decision.

con Unexpected rate hikes

One thing we noticed while reading through reviews are a number of people who, through no fault of their own, ended up having their rates bumped up significantly upon renewal. Sonnet does adjust its rates based on things like neighbourhood data and crime levels, so it looks like your rates can change even if you don’t make any claims.

con Not available in all provinces

Despite being "Proudly Canadian," Sonnet doesn't provide car insurance for all Canadians. At the time of writing, Sonnet Car Insurance is only available in Alberta, P.E.I., New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec. We hope that they expand to other Canadian provinces and territories, but we're unaware of whether Sonnet currently has plans to do so.

con No in-person opportunities

Sonnet has chat and email support, but they're not the company for you if you want an in-person touch. Those who are more comfortable speaking face-to-face with an insurance representative will want to try an insurance broker or another more traditional insurance provider.

Sonnet Car Insurance alternatives

Sonnet’s claim to fame is largely due to their lower prices, but in many cases you get what you pay for. Here’s a look at Sonnet’s available coverages compared to 3 more traditional insurance companies.

FAQ

Why choose Sonnet Car Insurance?

With Sonnet Car Insurance, you'll receive fast and precise quotes, enjoy some surprising perks, and save money overall. A few details are disappointing, such as the lack of brick-and-mortar branch locations, but the pros far outweigh the cons.

Is Sonnet Car Insurance available everywhere in Canada?

No. Sonnet currently only offers car insurance to people living in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and PEI. While we hope that this changes in the future, there hasn't been any communication from Sonnet on the subject.

Does Sonnet offer similar insurance coverage as other insurance providers?

Sonnet’s primary selling point is that it has lower rates than comparable insurance companies, but it also provides relatively similar auto insurance coverage as its competitors, ranging from essential to full coverage with options to personalize packages with add-on protections.

How long has Sonnet been in business?

Sonnet Insurance was founded in 2016, is headquartered in Toronto, and is part of a family of insurance companies controlled by the Definity Insurance Company. They’re federally regulated and underwrite their own insurance policies, including auto, home, and condo insurance.

Why is Sonnet Car Insurance so cheap?

Since Sonnet Car Insurance is fully online, its overhead is lower than other companies that operate brick-and-mortar business locations. Sonnet is therefore able to pass down these savings and provide customers with reasonable insurance rates.

Rating methodology

To calculate our Genius Ratings, we compare the features of the account or product in question with other similar products in Canada. We give each feature a score out of 5 based on that comparison. Once we’ve rated all the features, we run them through our proprietary algorithm to produce a final rating out of 5.

Awful company, no loyality
Terrible company. Awful customer service. Constantly raising rates without explanation no matter how long you've been with them. They'll charge you 30% of your annual premium to cancel when they've stopped earning your business.

DO NOT INSURE WITH SONNET
if i could leave negative stars, I would. My adjuster is a joke. Virtually every email looks like it was translated using google translate and written by a four year old. I get bounced around from person to person getting nothing done and wasting my time. 5 weeks since my claim was submitted and "approved" still no sign of a settlement.
TM | April 25, 2024
Claims take far too long to settle
My truck was stolen March 1st. It’s now April 25th and I still haven’t received any settlement. They’re saying it’s because the truck was found, which restarts the whole process. I gave them all the information regarding that on March 21st. April 12th no one picked up the truck or went to look at it. I still haven’t received any settlement from them. Even when calling the adjuster and leaving voicemails saying “please call me back” I get emails saying “sorry I missed your call”. Timelines they give are not accurate and you’re lucky to get the response of “I’ll keep you posted as soon as we can move forward”. I’ve had to take a loan to purchase another vehicle since their claim is taking so long, leaving me with interest I shouldn’t be dealing with. Their rates are great. But if you have a claim, at least in my case, their rates reflect the service.

Don't call them because they won't tell you anything useful
Easy To Use
Worst insurance company the adjusters are rude-incompitant and fight you on your own

NEVER use Sonnet Insurance as your auto insurance provider
Never use Sonnet Insurance as your auto insurance provider per my experience. Their system makes change to your account without your consent (it is illegal). Their system automatically increase your premium amount without any notifications until you receive an email noting "the change has been made" or you log into your account. Their system removes your name from the policy without notifying you which means you won't have coverage in case of car accident due to their systems issues. If you want to cancel the policy immediately because of the mess, their agents will tell you they would use the incorrect high premium amount for calculating the cancellation fee even though they admitted it's their fault. Also, they will charge you 2 months payment in advance which is unusual with other insurance companies. I had such a BAD experience with this company. My advice is DON'T TRY.....
