LastPass is a popular password management tool available for Canadians. Even if you only opt for the free version, you'll be able to store an unlimited amount of passwords, which can be automatically generated for extra protection. Unfortunately, you'll only be able to access your passwords on one device, unless you pay for the premium plan.
Apart from its 2 personal plans, LastPass also offers a family plan for a significant discount, as well as 3 different business plans (although we didn't look at business plans for this review). One of the best features of LastPass is the ability to easily and securely share passwords between users.
LastPass features
Interested in what LastPass can offer you? Here's a summary of its personal plans.
- Business, single user, and family plans available to easily share passwords
- Premium plan includes dark web monitoring, 1GB storage, and priority tech support
LastPass product rating: 3.5 stars
As one of the most popular password managers out there, LastPass offers plenty of features for pretty low fees. At the core is a way to save unlimited passwords across all your devices, but you'll also get a host of other online security features. These include dark web monitoring, as well as auto-generating passwords.
Though it's nice to have a free version of LastPass, you likely won't get much use out of it, since the saved passwords can only be used on one device. This is really the major downside of the free service.
Rating methodology
To calculate our Genius Ratings, we compare the features of the account or product in question with other similar products in Canada. We give each feature a score out of 5 based on that comparison. Once we’ve rated all the features, we run them through our proprietary algorithm to produce a final rating out of 5.

The pros of LastPass
There are many upsides to LastPass.
Free version available
If you don't have any room in your budget for yet another monthly subscription, you can opt to use LastPass completely free. The free plan includes unlimited password protection, access on one device type (either computer or mobile), plus auto-generated and auto-filled passwords.
Family plan available
If you're planning on going premium, you can opt for the family bundle for only $5.50 a month. With this plan, you'll get 6 premium licenses, plus the ability to easily share passwords with each other. Since the solo premium plan is $4.25, the family plan is amazing value.
Dark web monitoring with premium plan
LastPass premium comes with dark web monitoring, which checks if your email address has been compromised by searching for it in a database of breached credentials. If your email is found, you'll be automatically notified so you can quickly update your passwords.
1GB of encrypted storage with premium plan
As an added bonus for paying the premium fee, you'll get 1GB of encrypted file storage, which can be used for things like tax returns, passports, photo IDs, and similar files. 1GB isn't a whole lot of room, so it won't serve as a replacement for your normal cloud storage, but it's plenty if you're just looking to store the essentials.
Easily share passwords without compromising them
One of the best features of LastPass is the ability to create shared folders between the users on your family plans. That way, multiple people can access the same passwords without everyone knowing what the passwords actually are. They'll still be encrypted to the people you send them too, but they'll be able to use it on their browsers.
The cons of LastPass
Here are a few of the downsides to LastPass.
No email support for free users
If you're a free user, the only form of support you'll have is the FAQ and the chatbot. Premium users have access to the email service, but only business users have access to 24/7 phone support.
Limited access to passwords for free users
If you opt for the free version, you'll get limited use out of your LastPass account – since you can only use it on one type of device. You can choose to either access your passwords on desktop or mobile, but it can't be both. In such a digital age, where we're constantly moving from our phones to desktops, this could be a huge pain.

Has LastPass been hacked?
Yes, LastPass has been hacked, once in 2015 and again in August of 2022. No encrypted vault data was compromised, thankfully, largely because LastPas doesn't keep your master password stored, so even when they're compromised, your data isn't.
