Scotiabank Ultimate Package –
$100 GeniusCash
If you want the most you can get out of a chequing account, the Scotiabank Ultimate Package is all about the extra perks.
Not only will you get unlimited free transactions – including free global ATM withdrawals – you’ll also get credit card annual fee waivers, special rates, and unlimited transactions. This all comes with a $30.95 monthly fee that’s waived if you keep $6,000 per month in your account.
If you prefer physical bank locations and keeping all your money in one place, the Scotiabank Ultimate Package could have a lot of value for you. If you take advantage of all the fee waivers offered, you'll be saving $337 per year. That means the account will cost you a net fee of $34 per year, or $2.83 per month. And that's only if you don't keep the minimum balance of $6,000 – which will waive all your fees completely.
But if you're just looking for a normal chequing account with free transactions, going for a free chequing account instead may be a better bet for you.
The Scotiabank Ultimate Package is the chequing account that offers everything. The Coast Capital Unlimited Chequing Account is a mid-tier chequing account from Coast Capital. BMO Performance Chequing Account –
$160 GeniusCash
The BMO Performance Chequing Account is a popular mid-tier chequing account offered by one of Canada's biggest banks. BMO has been a banking powerhouse for decades, providing comprehensive services, advanced security measures, and top-notch professionalism for all clients.
True to form, BMO has created a robust banking product with the BMO Performance Chequing Account. It has a few more features than you might expect from a mid-tier account and is accessible to Canadians from coast to coast.
As a mid-tier account, the BMO Performance Chequing Account chequing account has all of the features you’d expect and a few extra perks besides. It's got the big things covered: unlimited transactions, free Interac e-Transfers®, a generous welcome bonus, and more, making its $17.95 monthly price tag seem quite reasonable.
Still, this account could be better. The $4,000 minimum balance for waiving fees is a bit steep and may turn some people off. And while a $40 credit card rebate is nothing to sneeze at, it only covers a fraction of the annual fees for most of the applicable cards.
The BMO Performance Chequing Account will get you unlimited transactions and Interac e-Transfers® for $17.95 a month – which can be cut down to $0 if you keep a minimum of $4,000 balance in your account.
- Bonus: Get $160 GeniusCash when you open your new account
- Unlimited transactions and Interac e-Transfers
- Rebate for BMO credit cards

BMO InvestorLine Self-Directed –
$90 GeniusCash
If you’re experienced with managing your own investments or self-directed trading, the BMO InvestorLine online brokerage may be just what you need. With advanced tools for experienced traders, and extra perks and benefits for people with lots of money to invest, this brokerage has won several awards over the years.
And while all this sounds pretty good, there are a few things to watch out for. While the fees are (generally) flat, they are higher than average. There are also no automated tools available to help save you time.
We’ve given BMO InvestorLine 5.0 stars for a few reasons. It scored well for having tools, perks, and benefits for experienced, frequent traders, or for people who have a lot ($250,000+) of money to invest.
It lost points because it really doesn’t have anything for anyone else. There are some online tutorials and demos, but no live practice accounts.
Maybe they’re trying to keep less wealthy newbies away, but we think they deserve to be knocked down a few points for that.
For the advanced trader, BMO InvestorLine Self-Directed offers a top-notch platform for managing your own investments. This online investing platform offers plenty of advanced tools along with extra perks and benefits for those who invest a lot.
- Advanced tools for active traders

Wealthsimple Trade
While you may have heard of Wealthsimple, did you know that Wealthsimple also offers Wealthsimple Trade? And it’s a little different. They advertise it as “a simpler way to trade,” and it’s hard to argue with that. You can only open a handful of account types. You can trade stocks, ETFs, options, margin, and corporate products on Canadian and U.S. exchanges. And that’s about it.
Wealthsimple Trade doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of most self-directed investing platforms. There’s no market research, and data tracking tools are rudimentary. On the other hand, it also charges no commission fees, no withdrawal fees, and no inactivity or maintenance fees.
Wealthsimple Trade is a little difficult to judge, really, because it’s designed for a different sort of user than most other self-directed investment platforms. That said, when compared against some of those more full-featured competitors, it comes up a little short.
We’ve given Wealthsimple Trade 3.9 stars because it’s a pretty limited platform, with few features, 1 major hidden-ish fee, and very limited investment account types. On the other hand…it charges no commission fees, withdrawal fees, inactivity fees, or maintenance fees. So it gains quite a few points there.

Coinbase –
$75 GeniusCash
Coinbase is one of the most well-known cryptocurrency exchanges in the world. Coinbase Canada only recently registered with the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), but it’s become popular for its no-fee deposits, membership rewards programs, and wide variety of available cryptocurrencies.
Unlike some exchanges, Coinbase charges maker/taker fees, which can make trading a bit more expensive. However, active members qualify for lower fees, so if you're a high-volume trader on Coinbase, your costs will likely stay reasonable.
Coinbase has a lot going for it. You can trade a wide variety of different cryptocurrencies, with all the usual suspects like Ethereum and Bitcoin available. There is no fee for an Interac e-Transfer deposit, and you'll get a discount on maker/taker fees if you're a high-volume trader. Its only shortcomings are the maker/taker fees, which are a little higher than others.
Coinbase is one of the best cryptocurrency exchanges in Canada. You can trade over 200 cryptocurrencies and get access to a discount on trade fees if you trade in high volumes.
- Plenty of cryptocurrencies to trade
- Offers staking
- Coinbase One membership offers rewards

Tangerine Savings Account –
$50 GeniusCash
The Tangerine Savings Account is a digital savings account offered by Tangerine Bank. The shining feature of this account is its welcome bonus – a strong 4.5% for 5 months. After the solid start, the interest rate goes down to 0.3%, which is still competitive with the big 5 banks.
Tangerine doesn’t charge any fees for this account or impose any minimum balances. With that said, getting money out of your account can be challenging as there’s no debit card access or Interac e-Transfers, only transfers to another account. Whether you find this account useful will depend on your individual needs.

The Tangerine Savings Account scores well for its low fees, promo interest rate, and automatic savings program. It loses some points for not having many transaction options and for its not bad, but not great regular interest rate.
The Tangerine Savings Account starts you out with a bang - 4.5% for the first 5 months. And if you happen to have a Tangerine Mastercard, you'll unlock a 3rd bonus category simply by getting your cash back deposited in your Tangerine Savings Account.
- Excellent promotional interest rate
- No fees or service charges
- No minimum balance required
- Automatic savings program
- Not the highest available interest rate
