Manulife travel insurance product rating: 2.5 stars

Manulife CoverMe travel insurance is one of the largest providers in Canada, and for good reason. They offer many of the basic insurance coverage, plus a handful of extras (including COVID travel insurance). It's also easy to add on to the basic plan, giving you plenty of customization options. There's even a student plan available to help students be protected, even with a more limited budget.

But if you're looking for some specific coverage options, like hotel accommodations or rental car insurance, you won't find any here.

Rating methodology

To calculate our Genius Ratings, we compare the features of the account or product in question with other similar products in Canada. We give each feature a score out of 5 based on that comparison. The pros of Manulife travel insurance

As one of the largest travel insurance providers in Canada, Manulife has lived up to its expectations by offering a streamlined experience with affordable rates.

Pros

pro5 easy-to-understand options

One of the best parts of Manulife is how easy it is to use. Once you fill out its relatively short questionnaire, you'll have 5 options to choose from: pandemic plan, single trip all inclusive, single trip emergency medical, a trip cancellation/interruption standalone plan, and a non-medical inclusive plan. For the single trip emergency medical plan, you even get to choose your deductible, which can help you save big.

pro COVID-19 Pandemic Travel Plan available

One of the most impressive features of Manulife is how quickly they responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by offering pandemic-tailored plans. Though these plans are much more expensive than the regular plan (they're about as much as the premium plan, but with less than half of the coverage) it's a rare way to feel safer travelling during difficult times.

pro Multi-trip plans available

If you're planning on making multiple trips over the next year, you could save money by getting one plan that will cover all of them. An added benefit is you won't have to worry about remembering to actually buy travel insurance every time.

pro Family and student coverages available

If you're travelling with family or are a student, you can take advantage of some discounts to help you protect yourself for less.

pro Gave us some of the lowest quotes in our test

When we compared 8 different travel insurance providers using a single fictional couple, Manulife gave us good results starting around $154. In fact, some other provider's lowest ranges were higher than the max Manulife gave us, which is impressive. Just note that quotes are based on a variety of factors, so it's best to shop around for your specific situation.

pro Apply at any age (and no medical questions if you're under 60)

Manulife has no age restrictions when it comes to applying for their plans. And if you're under 60, you don't even need to answer invasive medical questions – which makes the process a breeze.

The cons of Manulife travel insurance

Wondering what some of the downsides are to Manulife travel insurance? Let's go over a few.

Cons

con No mention of 24/7 support

The Manulife website makes no mention of offering 24/7 claims service or support, which could be inconvenient. You can call them, email them, or chat with them...but only from Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 8 PM Eastern Time.

con No rental car insurance

This is more often seen on credit card travel insurance plans, but it would still be nice to see some rental car insurance plans.

con No hotel burglary insurance

If you're concerned about hotel burglary, even Manulife's most premium plans don't mention this type of coverage. That means your belongings may be at risk if you leave them in your hotel room.

Frustrating customer service
When trying to file a claim, representatives seem well-trained to give either no information, useful information or outright false information. They stall the process and prevent me as a client to file a claim for direct hospital billing in the USA. After half a year, I still haven't found out how it could be done, nor the hospital network representative. The plan seems to be to hold out long enough that the 1-year period expires, during which the claim has to be filed. I wish my employer had chosen a different insurance company.

extremely poor service
Extremely poor service and agents full of attitude. Extremely poor communication, the existing policy can't be renewed online and has to be done through an agent. Agents are only available on weekdays, so essentially no way to renew/extend a policy over a weekend.

Stay away!
Manulife will find every excuse in the book not to pay on the policy…every excuse!!! Don’t bother buying this travel policy….they won’t pay!

Painfully slow processing times
If you are planning on traveling with Manulife ’Cover Me’ travel insurance, please reconsider! My husband and I travelled to the Dominican Republic in December and unfortunately we needed to take a little trip to the hospital. Long story short, we submitted our claim (standard/uncomplicated situation) with Manulife in early January and our claim has been in review since late February. I have phoned twice in March and April asking when I can expect the claim to be processed and was told “within 2 weeks” both times, now more than 6 weeks ago. It has been 15 weeks, nearly 4 months, since the claim was submitted and that is far too long for someone to be potentially incurring debt while waiting for reimbursement.

The Manulife Travel Insurance SUCK
Hi My name is Marco from Toronto Canada. I bought a Manulife Travel Insurance for my wife, my daughter and myself to go to Mexico for 2 months. At the beginning of December, 2021. My wife got an stomach infeccion ( gastroenteritis ) and I took her to the Mexican Red Cross to the emergency room. I contacted them using the policy phone number and after 2 hours waiting, a guy answered me with a very bad attitude as if he would be making me a favor. He gave me a case number and an email to send the invoices, prescriptions and all the documents from the hospital by email. I sent them after 2 days around the middle of December, 2021. Today It is January 18, 2022. Until now I did NOT get any answer and any payment either. This Manulife Travel Insurance SUCKS. DO NOT waste your money and time in this crapy service. You can be in a seriuos health trouble trusting in this shitty company. There are more options. Take care. Thanks for reading. Bye.
