As one of the biggest banks in Canada, RBC offers travel insurance alongside its large suite of other banking products. With RBC travel insurance, you'll have the option of being covered by all the basics, including travel medical, trip cancellation, and trip interruption – all backed by a big bank you likely already know and trust. Helping take things to the next level are the registered nurses and physicians that are available 24/7 to help you with your needs.

But as with most big banks, you'll likely pay a bit more to get the privilege of being covered by RBC travel insurance. It's important to always shop around before committing to an insurance policy.

Rating methodology

To calculate our Genius Ratings, we compare the features of the account or product in question with other similar products in Canada. We give each feature a score out of 5 based on that comparison. Once we’ve rated all the features, we run them through our proprietary algorithm to produce a final rating out of 5.

The pros of RBC travel insurance

Let's take a look at reasons you'd want to go with RBC travel insurance over other options.

Pros

proIncludes most main types of travel insurance we track

There are 4 main types of RBC travel insurance packages: comprehensive, travel medical, trip cancellation and interruption, and a travel within Canada plan. With these 4, RBC covers the majority of the main types of travel insurance, including travel accident and emergency medical.

proSingle trip and multi-trip coverage available

If you're planning on making several trips over the next year, opting for the multi-trip annual plan coverage could actually save you money. Though it's more expensive at the outset, it'll cover you for an unlimited number of trips during a 365 day period. Just note that each of those trips will only have a certain amount of coverage, ranging between 4 and 60 days.

proPlans with seniors in mind

Of the 4 main comprehensive RBC travel insurance packages, most of the plans allow up to 64 or 74 years old. But the TravelCare Package is made specifically with seniors in mind, giving you the most coverage if you're over 65 (multi-trip) or 75 (single trip). On top of that, the Non-Medical Package and Travel Within Canada Package both are advertised as all ages.

proRegistered nurses and physicians available 24/7

On top of their 24/7 worldwide claims emergency assistance, RBC also has consulting physicians and registered nurses available to help 24/7. They could be a great source of information and comfort if you're ever stuck in a foreign place with an emergency medical situation on your hands.

proDiscount if you're travelling in a group of 10 or more

If you're travelling with 10 or more people, you can buy travel insurance for everyone, and each traveller will receive a discount. Each person will also receive coverage personalized to their own needs.

The cons of RBC travel insurance

Here are a few things to keep in mind about RBC travel insurance.

Cons

con Not a lot of customization options

Some travel insurance companies give you nearly full control over what's included in your plan, helping you tailor your premiums to your needs. While RBC does have several pre-built options available, there's not much you can do to change the specifics of those plans.

conExpensive premiums

If you go with a big bank like RBC, chances are you're not going to be getting the best price. In fact, when we did a comparison between 8 travel insurance companies here, RBC had the highest starting price and widest price range.

con Doesn't offer COVID travel insurance

If you were hoping to get some coverage for COVID-related expenses, RBC travel insurance won't provide that for you. Where other companies have made an effort to accommodate these concerns, RBC has chosen not to.

FAQ

What is RBC travel insurance?

RBC travel insurance is a single-purchase type of insurance coverage you can buy to protect your future trips, offered by a big bank. You have the choice of buying a single trip plan, or save money with a multi-trip plan if you're planning on travelling multiple times in the next year. This insurance will help cover certain travel expenses, like emergency medical, lost baggage, and cancelled plans.

How do I make a RBC travel insurance claim?

You have 4 main options for making a claim with RBC: online, over the phone, via fax, or through the mail. The best tip to keep in mind is to contact RBC as soon as possible to make your claim. For more information, you can call RBC Insurance toll-free at 1-800-387-2487.

What's the cost of RBC travel insurance?

The cost of RBC travel insurance will vary significantly with many factors that are part of the application process, namely your age, where you're going, how long you're going for, and how much you want to be covered for. You can get a quote right on RBC's website, but our research does show it's more expensive than most choices.

How do I apply for RBC travel insurance?

Applying for RBC travel insurance is easy. You can do it right on their website in a matter of minutes and you'll usually be given the option to buy coverage right away. You can also call 1-855-547-9944 if you prefer to talk to a real agent.

What is RBC travel insurance contact information?

If you're making a claim, you can call RBC travel insurance at 1-800-387-2487. The call center will be open 8 am to 5pm ET, Monday to Friday (note: you can also make the claim online 24/7). If you're just looking for information on policies, you can call 1-855-547-9944.

Is RBC travel insurance good?

RBC travel insurance is middling at best. It's especially strong in its wide variety of availability for seniors, and it doesn't hurt that it's backed by the reputation of a big bank. But the premiums are high, the policies aren't highly customizable, and they've neglected COVID coverage.

AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE. STAY AWAY
Ive been on hold for 2+ hours and called back on a different phone to complain and they just put me on hold again. All i want to do is extend my policy. The customer service is unacceptable. AVOID USING RBC TRAVEL INSURANCE AT ALL COSTS. Clearly this is and ongoing issue…

RBC Brand taking a real hit to its reputation on this travel Insurance
I bought a multi trip policy with RBC insurance over 7 months ago. I have had to extend my trips several times over the last 7 months. The only way to do this is by calling in. Over the last 7 months this has entailed waiting on hold for in excess of 4 hours on 5 different occasions. The last time i was on hold for over 4.5 hours and then the call was dropped. This time still on hold after 3 hours and the nice recording with the announcement that says how important the call is important to us repeats over and over again back to back. The call is obviously not important to them otherwise the would have a call back feature or a way to contact through email or chat. This is not higher than normal call volume if this is going on for more than a year RBC you are dropping the ball on this one. I bank and invest with you and considering moving my business elsewhere.

Nearly impossible to file a claim
I have called to file a claim on 4 different occasions and was on hold for 2+ hours each time. The email to file a claim said they're sorry if they can't meet their 15 WEEK promised email response time. Making an account with their online insurance provider doesn't allow you to file a claim even though they say it does and tell you to call (and never get through to a person) if it doesn't. Overall, it seems like they make the process of filing a claim so difficult in the hopes you'll just give up and not do it.
