TD travel insurance product rating: 5.0 stars

TD travel insurance offers all the basics you need in 4 simple plans. There may not be as many customization options as your other options, but things are streamlined and much simpler when you don't have to choose all the details. You'll also get some less common coverage included, like sending your children home (with an escort) if they were travelling with you.

Being a big bank, TD may not have the cheapest prices on the planet. Usually, you pay a little more for the convenience of working with a big bank. Make sure to shop around before committing to any insurance cost.

Rating methodology

To calculate our Genius Ratings, we compare the features of the account or product in question with other similar products in Canada. We give each feature a score out of 5 based on that comparison. Once we’ve rated all the features, we run them through our proprietary algorithm to produce a final rating out of 5.

The pros of TD travel insurance

So what are some reasons you'd go for TD travel insurance over your other Canadian options?

Pros

proBacked by a big bank you trust

As one of the 5 biggest banks in Canada, chances are you already know TD as a reputable company – and this trust is even better if you also have products with them.

pro4 straightforward plans available

Big banks are all about convenience, and TD travel insurance definitely fits the bill. There may not be very many choices for you, but the quote process is very simple and streamlined – you either get single trip coverage (with or without travel cancellation and interruption) or an annual plan for unlimited trips. Click here to get your quote.

pro Some unusual coverage included

Most TD travel insurance plans are pretty straightforward, but some have unique coverage that you won't find elsewhere. For instance, in the event of an emergency, any children who were travelling with you will be escorted and returned home at no cost to you. Pets will also be returned home. And if you're unable to drive your own vehicle back home, your insurance will take care of the return.

pro24/7 emergency assistance

If you ever need to contact TD while travelling, they have 24/7 support from anywhere in the world. This is ideal, because it means you don't have to worry about time zones when calling to make a claim.

The cons of TD travel insurance

And of course, there will be a few reasons to encourage you to price-check other travel insurance providers as well.

Cons

conTrip cancellation and interruption is at extra cost

If you want trip cancellation and interruption insurance, the cost is calculated separately from the standard premium, which is good to keep in mind. In our trial, we got $43.44 for medical coverage as well as $92.50 for trip cancellation and interruption coverage.

conMight not have the cheapest premiums

And since big banks are in favour of convenience, they can sometimes cost more than other online travel insurance companies. As an example, our test run was a 26 year old from New Brunswick going on a $1,000 trip for 8 days. TD didn't ask the destination country, but did give a mid-range price of $39 plus $79.60 for trip cancellation and interruption.

Hard To Use
My husband called during a trip and were told that we would have coverage for XRays, MRCP & ERCP, Bloodwork, medication. But we had to pay out of pocket first and then submit a claim. Which we did. Only to learn that they lied about paying for these services. We only received our initial payment for the policy. They said that we lied about pre-existing conditions. Which we did not. Our doctor had prescribed blood pressure medication, but my husband only took 2 doses and we found it lowered his blood pressure too low. So it was not an actual diagnosis. But they deemed our claim fully. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS LOW LIFE CHEATING COMPANY!!!

No accountability!
I purchased TD travel insurance for a total of 47 days with 4 days top up because of Visa Travel Card. I was in a situation when the probability of changing my flight was high due to certain circumstances so before purchasing the insurance, I specifically asked them if I can get a refund if I had to come back early. I came back in 35 days as some important papers had to be submitted by September 9th. When I called TD Travel Insurance to find out how to claim for the extra days I had paid the insurance for and they asked me to e-mail a copy of the boarding pass and send it to them with a covering letter. I did that and waited for action. No word was received.. When I called again some one else said I should fill in a form which she e-mailed to me and that was not the correct form. So called again and this time I was told that I am not entitled to a refund as there was no emergency for me to return early. I would never rely on what I am told unless it is given in writing. Please think twice before purchasing Travel insurance from TD.

The most horrible travel insurance in Canada wide
I used it, travel, my trip got cut short by the hosting country, ask my insurance, they say NO way we cover you, even though this is why we bought. End of the story, quick to take the $, QUICKER to deny you coverage!

The WORST travel insurance company Canada
TD travel insurance is the worst travel company in Canada! No communication, no customer service, just take your money and run if you have to make a claim! If they were the last travel insurance company in the world I would not use them! Horrible company!!!

The worst travel insurance in Ontario
TD has the worst travel insurance ever. They charge you the premium immediately before travel and then give you the worst service, communication and compensation ever. Do not go with TD for travel insurance. It is now 5 months since I submitted my claims and they keep sending me spam emails and have not refunded me yet for my claims.
