The Toronto-Dominion Bank, commonly known as TD bank, was created through a merger in 1955 between the Bank of Toronto and the Dominion Bank. It acquired Canada Trust in 2000. Since then, it has become one of the largest banks in Canada and expanded globally into international markets.

TD Bank pros

Take a look at a few of the reasons why Canadians love TD bank:

Trusted big bank in Canada

It may not be the biggest bank in Canada, but it holds steady as the second-largest in terms of net worth. TD is a household name that’s been around for nearly 75 years, which provides many Canadians the stability and peace of mind they want from a banking institution.

Vast product selection

The number and variety of products and services available with TD make it easy to keep all your financial dealings under one roof. Not only does it offer a wide range of products and services, but there are ample options within each category, catering to different needs, wants, and age groups.

Highly-rated home and condo insurance

According to our Genius Rating, TD Bank’s home insurance and condo insurance stand out as some of the best in Canada. Coverage options are extensive, there are several opportunities for personalization, and discounts are available for those who purchase policies online.

Big welcome bonuses on chequing accounts

Need a chequing account and want to cash in on a large welcome offer? TD is currently offering up to $450 on its TD All-Inclusive Banking Plan and TD Unlimited Chequing Account. There's also a welcome bonus available for new TD Every Day Savings Account holders.

TD Bank cons

There are a few things that hold TD back. Here’s a look:

Interest rates aren’t as high as others

The interest rates on TD’s savings accounts are nothing special. The TD ePremium Savings Account has the bank's highest interest rate of 0.85%, but only with a $10,000 balance. You'll find better rates with high-interest savings accounts from online banks, usually with no minimum balance requirements at all.

Chequing perks and prices could be better

The chequing accounts come with quite a few conveniences, but don't quite match those of other premium chequing accounts. And when you consider the plethora of free chequing accounts out there, it can be difficult to find value in TD's chequing options.

TD Bank accounts: chequing and savings

3.9

TD has four tiers of chequing accounts, a student chequing account, and a couple of U.S. chequing accounts. There are also three savings accounts to choose from. Chequing account fees are between $3.95 and $30.95.

The two noteworthy chequing accounts are the TD All-Inclusive Banking Plan and the TD Unlimited Chequing Account. Both offer unlimited transactions and a welcome bonus up to $450. All of TD’s savings accounts are bare bones, with the maximum interest rate reaching just 0.85% on the TD ePremium Savings Account.
