Crunchyroll is made for anime lovers. Although it is an independently run company, the organization is a partnership between Sony Pictures in the U.S. and Aniplex in Japan. This streaming platform claims to be the service with the largest collection of anime, but it also offers much more than just videos – you'll also find a blog, chat forums, digital manga, and more.

After its recent merger with Funimation, Crunchyroll now has a seemingly endless supply of anime content. But with all that it has going on, the Crunchyroll streaming site feels a bit disjointed. It's certainly not as smooth an interface as other streaming platforms, but this won't be much of an issue for anime fans.

Crunchyroll product rating: 4.0 stars

It's hard to argue that Crunchyroll has the most impressive library of anime titles you'll find from any streaming service – and for very reasonable prices. With monthly subscriptions for Fans and Mega Fans, plus a discounted annual subscription option for Mega Fans, there's a price point for almost every budget.

Rating methodology

To calculate our Genius Ratings, we compare the features of the account or product in question with other similar products in Canada. We give each feature a score out of 5 based on that comparison. Once we’ve rated all the features, we run them through our proprietary algorithm to produce a final rating out of 5.

The pros of Crunchyroll

See for yourself what perks Crunchyroll has to offer.

Pros

pro The biggest anime library available

It was possibly the biggest before the merger, but combining forces with Funimation has pushed Crunchyroll's library to new heights. The website says they have 1,300+ titles, 30,000 episodes and more than 16,000 hours of content. This includes movies, tv episodes, dubbed content, simulcasts, and more.

pro New episodes available very soon

For those of us on the other side of the planet, accessing Japanese television shows can be a bit tricky. But with Crunchyroll, you're able to watch the latest anime episodes as soon as 1 hour after they air in Japan.

pro Compatible with a wide range of devices

The number of devices that support Crunchyroll is impressive. You can use it on your desktop or laptop computer and your mobile device, of course, but there's also a long list of other options: Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Fire Stick, Xbox, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. The Switch is especially noteworthy as it's not known for supporting many streaming platforms.

pro Video games and digital manga

There aren't many streaming platforms that offer extra entertainment options like Crunchyroll does. When you're tired of watching movies, you can check out the dozens of manga titles, all available in English. Or you can try a video game – Crunchyroll Games is their own label of in-house designed and anime-based video games. Some are not yet available in North America, but they're working to change this.

The cons of Crunchyroll

Despite its high rating, there are a few downsides to Crunchyroll's service.

Cons

con No more free, ad-inclusive viewing

Nobody actually likes ads, but Crunchyroll used to allow viewers to watch for free if they put up with the ads (and other limitations). Now, all subscription tiers are ad-free but there is no free streaming option at all. Even if they didn't want to offer it for free, it would be nice to have an ad-inclusive option for a low price, especially as more and more streaming services are taking this approach.
