With a long and storied history, the Globe and Mail is one of Canada's most widely read newspapers. Reaching over 6 million readers every week, the G&M covers stories and news of interest to people across all of Canada, where most other newspapers are much more focused on local or regional news. And, as a venerable Canadian institution, you know it's news you can trust.

The Globe and Mail offers both digital and print subscriptions, but we've focused on the digital-only option here. It's also the Canadian distributor for the New York Times and offers discounts on both digital or print edition subscriptions.

Globe and Mail product rating: 2.3 stars

The Globe and Mail covers news from across all of Canada, from coast to coast to coast. And while it does have a fairly heavy focus on business and investing topics, the newspaper has a variety of other sections, including sports, life, arts, and real estate. There are also more focused current feature sections that collect the news of the day.

The only drawbacks to the Globe And Mail are that it's not published on Sunday and that it has a relatively steep regular subscription price. In this day and age, many people expect to get their news for free, but sometimes it's worth paying a bit more to get something a lot better.

Rating methodology

To calculate our Genius Ratings, we compare the features of the account or product in question with other similar products in Canada. We give each feature a score out of 5 based on that comparison. Once we’ve rated all the features, we run them through our proprietary algorithm to produce a final rating out of 5.

The cons of a Globe and Mail digital subscription

Of course there are a couple of drawbacks you'll want to consider as well.

Cons

con The regular subscription price is a bit steep

When your first year is up and the promotional pricing changes, you'll be paying $7.99 per week for digital-only access. That's a huge jump and can be quite a shock to your budget.

con Doesn't publish on Sunday

Where some Canadian newspapers publish all week long, the Globe and Mail does not put out a Sunday edition. This may be disappointing for the more avid news hounds in the world.

They are like dealing with a timeshare salesperson
Signed up for a trial period for $4 / month. After that it went to $36 / month - which is insane. Called to cancel and the representative offered me a full year at $119, when I said no, he lowered it to $99, when I said no again he lowered it to $72. I declined as I don't use the service, but what kind of bargaining is this? Is this not a reputable well known news source? Doing business like they are selling a time share in Mexico. In addition, they do not provide refunds if you forget to cancel. Any other reputable business - such as Microsoft - will refund you for the unused portion. Globe and Mail is ridiculous and a bit of a scam. Content is hit and miss, but business dealings - terrible.

Great Offer-Hard to Cancel though
Easy To Use
Great offer for the genius cash back, I got the 30$ a few weeks after subscribing. After the first month I decided i didn't use it enough to justify paying 9$/month so I cancelled but you have to phone a representative during their business hours to cancel the subscription and they try to get you to stay so its not a very simple process.
