As you can guess from the name, the National Post is one of Canada's few newspapers that has a national rather than a regional or local focus. With a strong eye to news, politics, and business – and a lighter touch on topics like food and lifestyle – the National Post might not be of great interest for many Canadians.

At $14 a month for the digital-only subscription, the National Post's subscription fees are also pretty hard to swallow. On the other hand, you do get digital access to the Financial Post, and valuable promo subscription offers are offered quite consistently.

National Post product rating: 5.0 stars

Owned by the Postmedia Network, the National Post has a lot to offer Canadians across the country, particularly those who have a strong interest in news, business, and finance. With steep subscription fees, however, the business-centric focus of the newspaper, and its lack of real local coverage, may make it less interesting to many.

Rating methodology

To calculate our Genius Ratings, we compare the features of the account or product in question with other similar products in Canada. We give each feature a score out of 5 based on that comparison. Once we’ve rated all the features, we run them through our proprietary algorithm to produce a final rating out of 5.

The pros of the National Post

Here are some of the upsides to a National Post subscription.

Pros

pro Quality Canadian journalism

In a day and age where many rely on some questionable sources for their daily news, it's always good to have access to a publication that upholds legitimate journalistic standards and works to report accurate and unbiased news to the Canadian public.

pro Unlimited online access

Once you subscribe to the National Post, you get unlimited access to the entire newspaper and its archives, including the popular Financial Post. If you're a hardcore financial news junkie, this might be worth the monthly fee.

pro Strong focus on news and business (almost to a fault)

Where some newspapers treat business as just another of many topics to cover, the National Post puts it front and center. Even more so with its sister newspaper, the Financial Post. Whether this is a strength or not is really up to you – not all of us are that interested in these topic areas.

The cons of the National Post

There are some things to be aware of with the National Post.

Cons

con Fees skyrocket if you add a print subscription

If you want to add a print edition to your subscription, be prepared for your fees to rise sharply. For the digital + weekend print delivery subscription, you'll pay $21.67 per month. Increase that to a digital + daily print delivery subscription, and you'll pay $45.50 per month. Neither of these extra subscriptions has an annual payment option. And those prices are before tax.

con Website is awkward and difficult to navigate

If you use the website to read the National Post, you might find it a little confusing and difficult to navigate. Many sections of the newspaper are stashed under a vague "More" menu item, while News and Politics are on the top level. Once you get used to it, it's not so bad, but it's just overall a subpar reading experience.

FAQ

Who owns the National Post?

The National Post is owned by the Postmedia Network, which also owns the Calgary Herald, The Edmonton Journal, The Montreal Gazette, and the Ottawa Citizen, among others. They also own the Financial Post, and a host of Canadian magazines.

Is a National Post subscription worth it?

If you're a news junkie who is able to take full advantage of the digital access you get to an array of newspapers across the country, it's definitely worth considering. The digital subscription fee is pretty steep however, so it might not make sense in everyone's budget.

How much does a National Post subscription cost?

The National Post online only subscription costs $29.99 per month, or $290 per year. If you also want a print edition delivered to your home (either on weekends only, or daily), the subscription fees go up significantly. You can read more about these here.
