You can collect CPP and OAS while living outside Canada during your golden years. However, there are a few conditions.

To receive your Canada Pension Plan while living abroad, you must be at least 60 years of age, have worked in Canada, and have contributed to CPP during that time.

To collect your Old Age Security while living outside the country, you must be at least 65 years of age, a Canadian citizen or resident, and have worked at least 20 years in Canada since the age of 18.

Key Takeaways

  • Canadians living abroad are able to collect CPP and OAS payments as long as they meet the program requirements.
  • Both CPP and OAS are considered income, so they are taxable.
  • Even if you are out of Canada for more than six months, you'll continue to receive your CPP payments if you qualify.
  • Depending on the country you reside in, your OAS payments may cease after six months, but you can restart them once you return to Canada.

Can you receive CPP and OAS outside of Canada?

So long as you qualify, you're able to collect CPP and OAS payments wherever you live.

You're subject to the same requirements for receiving CPP, whether you're living within Canada or abroad.

If you live outside the country and want to collect OAS payments, you'll have to meet more stringent requirements than recipients living in Canada.

Conditions for receiving CPP outside of Canada

To receive CPP payments while living abroad, you're still subject to the same conditions as those who choose to remain in Canada. You must:

  • Be at least 60 years old
  • You must have worked in Canada and contributed to CPP during your time here

Remember, CPP is a "member contributed plan," which means that any Canada Pension Plan contribution you make remains yours, no matter where you choose to live in the world.

If the country you choose to live in has signed a social security agreement with Canada, you may also qualify for the pension benefits of that country.

For more information, see: Lived or living outside Canada - Pension and benefits.

How to collect CPP outside of Canada

To collect CPP payments while living outside Canada, you must take the following steps:

  • Fill out a paper CPP application
  • Mail the completed form back to Service Canada.

Your payments will be sent to you via direct deposit. If you choose to receive your payments via cheque, they will be mailed out during the last three business days of each month.

Conditions for receiving OAS outside of Canada

To receive OAS payments while living abroad, there are a few conditions you need to meet that are slightly more restrictive than normal.

You must:

  • Be at least 65 years old
  • Be a Canadian citizen or legal resident (at least on the day before you left)
  • Have lived in Canada for at least 20 years since you were 18 years old.

Like with CPP, you could also qualify if you live in a country that has a social security agreement with Canada. Even if you live in a country without a social security agreement with Canada, you can still receive your OAS payment for 6 months after you leave Canada before it terminates.

If you return to Canada, contact Service Canada to start receiving OAS again.

How to collect OAS outside of Canada

If you'd like to collect OAS payments while living outside Canada, follow these steps:

  • Complete a paper OAS application
  • Mail it back to Service Canada

You'll receive your OAS payments by either direct deposit or by cheque.

What happens to OAS and CPP if you leave Canada for more than six months?

If you're qualified to receive OAS while outside Canada, your payments will most likely continue as normal even after you hit the six-month mark. However, this depends on the country where you choose to live – Service Canada provides a list of countries that Canada has social security agreements with.

Assuming you reside in such an agreement-compliant country, you'll continue to receive CPP payments even if you're outside Canada for more than six months.

If you're not qualified to receive OAS payments while living outside Canada, your payments will stop six months after the month you left.

When you return to Canada, contact Service Canada to restart your OAS payments.

Are CPP and OAS taxed?

Hi there, I'm considering moving outside of Canada next year. I'll turning 50 next year. I have been working for 25 years. Will I be able to receive CPP at 60 and OAS at 65 while living outside of Canada? Or will only be able to receive both CPP/OAS if I move back to Canada at 65? Both countries have a social security agreement.

Hello,

CPP would be paid out to you no matter where you live for up to 6 months as long as you meet the necessary conditions which are that you are at least 60 years old, and have worked in Canada and contributed to CPP during that time. If you reside in a country which has a has social security agreements with Canada, you'll continue to receive CPP payments even if you're outside Canada for more than six months. International social security agreements and the Canada Pension Plan

For OAS payments, this would also be paid out to you if you meet the requirements: you must be at least 65 years old, be a Canadian citizen or legal resident (at least on the day before you left), and you have lived in Canada for at least 20 years since you were 18 years old. If you qualify for OAS, your payments will most likely continue as normal even after you hit the six-month mark.

Hello Carol,

Since you have lived in Canada for over 20 years, you'll be able to receive OAS payments while living abroad.

According to the Government of Canada website, the survivor's pension should continue even if you remarry.

Please note that you cannot collect GIS if you are outside Canada for more than 6 months.

Once you have your new address and phone number, make sure to update them with Service Canada to avoid any issues. In order to do that, you can Contact the Canada Pension Plan and Contact Old Age Security.

Hello, my question is about my mother's benefits. She immigrated to Canada in 2009 as a refugee and has lived there ever since. She was able to work for about nine years and was then on disability due to fibromyalgia. Now, at 67, she has been diagnosed with early-onset dementia due to ptsd, and her living situation gets more complicated with the days. She shares a home with my brother, who suffers from mental illness and is incapable of taking care of himself, and my sister, who is well but has been unable to work due to taking on the role of caregiver for both of them. I am narrating the story in order to provide context for our situation. At this point, my mother's best chance would be to go back to her home country, where the rest of her family resides. To make this happen, she would need to keep receiving the OAS to pay for her expenses, but she is not yet at the 20-year mark. Is there any option available for them?

Hey Vicky,

Thank you for commenting!

I would suggest looking into discussing the specifics of your situation with a financial advisor or contacting the Canada Revenue Agency, and hopefully they'll be able to answer your questions directly.

Hi I have a permanent spinal cord injury and since age 55 I have been on cpp disability as welll as a survivors pension, they are combined into one. Five months ago I moved to Bolivia. The research I have done says I will recieve my cpp and OAS as one once I reach the age of 65. I am 58 now, I will keep my Canadian citizenship and my Canadian bank account but in three years I can become a Bolivian citizen. I called the CRA and they told me its fine to have two citizenships. I worked hard all my life and made good money, my current disability pension is 1534 Canadian dollars per month. My question is how much will my pension increase when it changes into OAS? And will I qualify now for the NR5 form for reduction of the 25 percent witholding tax if I do not own anything in Canada and also do not have a large bank account. I used 34,000 dollars in my last two years in Canada just to help me survive with the cost of living. Thank you very much. By the way my spinal cord injury is not like others, my spinal cord is herniated at the t8 level and is pushing into my heart. This is inoperable and causes many problems. I am number 171 in the world with this rare condition. I will see my dr in Canada once a year as some medication I am on is unattainable in Bolivia. I get a yrs supply of the strongest pain meds at a time. Thank you for your time and please hopefully answer my message. I worked 38 yrs as a structural designer and lived in Canada for 58 yrs.

Hi...I am 55 and on CPP Disability. As the high cost of living in Canada is next to impossible on this income, I am considering moving outside of the country. If I move now at 55 can I still receive my CPP Disability? Will it turn over into my regular CPP at 65? Can I still collect OAS at 65, if I move now at 55? I am considering Japan as I have family there. Japan does have a Social Security Agreement with Canada. Do I need to come back to Canada every 6 months or can I remain outside of Canada for the duration? I greatly appreciate you time. Thank you RBG

Hello,

Yes, you can receive CPP disability while living outside of the country, and when you turn 65 your CPP disability benefit is automatically changed to a CPP retirement pension. And you can collect CPP while outside of Canada.

To receive OAS payments while living abroad, there are a few conditions you need to meet. You must:

- be at least 65 years old,

- be a Canadian citizen or legal resident, and

- have lived in Canada for at least 20 years since you were 18 years old.

If you decide to move, make sure to update your address and phone number with Service Canada to avoid any issues.

Hope this helps!

Hello, this issue of whether OAS payments terminate after 6 months of non-residency is really not clear. Could you clarify and explain it better. What is the source of your information?

Yulia
Yulia |November 23, 2022
Hey Catherine, According to the Government of Canada website, if you do not qualify for receiving Old Age Security outside Canada, your payments will stop if you are out of the country for more than 6 months after the month you left. You cannot collect the Guaranteed Income Supplement if you are outside of Canada for more than 6 months. You can qualify to receive Old Age Security pension payments while living outside of Canada if one if these reasons applies to you: - you lived in Canada for at least 20 years after turning 18 - you lived and worked in a country that has a social security agreement with Canada. The time you lived or worked in that country and Canada must be at least 20 years Hope this helps!

Rather than mentioning it as an afterthought, hidden in the volumes of text, you should blare it in bold letters, or even as a headline: "You can still receive your OAS payment for 6 months after you have left the country and then it will terminate".

If you have not lived in Canada for 20 years then the 6 months applies to you..if you got 20 years then you are ok.
