If you have a furry companion, you already know how important they are to you. It can be hard to think about what could happen if disaster struck – could you afford to pay the medical bills? Would you have to make a hard choice, because you can’t afford to spend thousands on your pet?
That’s where pet insurance comes in, giving some pet owners peace of mind. Sonnet pet insurance is one of your many options in Canada, covering the basics like accidents, illness, surgeries, and dental care. And as an online-only insurance company, it can give it to you for cheap (beginning) rates and from the comfort of your home. But is it your best choice?
Sonnet pet insurance features
Here’s what Sonnet pet insurance can offer you.
- Canadian citizen
- Age of majority
* These quotes (and the ones in the table below) are meant for illustrative purposes only and were obtained using specific scenarios of a 5 year old male golden retriever and 5 year old female ragdoll. The cheapest option was chosen, which may not include everything listed in the table. Your own situation and various other factors may impact what your personal quotes are.
Sonnet pet insurance product rating: 5.0 stars
Sonnet pet insurance covers all the basics and provides a few extra coverages to boot. Overall, the experience was easy and quick, resulting in a competitive quote (though not the best one we were offered).
The downsides are that Sonnet didn’t offer some extra coverages that many people would want, such as prescription food. It’s also an online-only company, which helps make the plans cheaper, but does take some extra trust.
Sonnet did well by having the 4 main features we’ve identified, plus some extras to top it off (though not as many extras as you may want). They also gave us a decent cat quote, but their dog quote was a bit more expensive in comparison to other quotes we received.
Rating methodology
To come up with a star rating for our product reviews, we first break down a product into its main features, which you can see in the table above. We then give each feature a rating out of 5, depending on how the product does in comparison to similar products. The average of these scores becomes the overall rating, out of a possible 5 stars.

The pros of Sonnet pet insurance
Here are some of the good things about Sonnet pet insurance.
Hits all the basic coverages
Sonnet hits all the essential coverages you’d likely want included with pet insurance, such as accidents, illness, surgery, and even dental care. How much is covered per year varies with the plan you choose, but the limits are $2,500 per accident, $2,500 per illness, and $300 dental coverage per year.
A handful of extra coverages available
And you’ll get even more covered, including $350 worth of special coverage like alternative therapy, behavioural therapy, and medical devices. Then to top it off, their add-ons include boarding kennel fees, holiday cancellation, and more.
Offered decently low quotes
The quotes we received for our 2 scenarios were decently low, especially for our cat. The dog was a bit higher, but not the most expensive we received from the 4 companies we sampled. If you’re looking to save money, Sonnet offers you a decent chance.
Easy and quick quote process
The quote was quick, easy, and intuitive. Once you filled in your information, you had a detailed summary of what your plan could give you, including the option to choose between 2 different deductibles for each plan. This is super helpful for when you’re doing some price comparison.
The cons of Sonnet pet insurance
And here are some downsides as well.
No coverage for prescription food
One of the most important coverages that aren’t included with Sonnet pet insurance is prescription food, which is something that other companies do offer. If this is something you think you’ll need, you may want to look elsewhere.
Sonnet has a history of increasing insurance rates
Many reviewers on other products have claimed that Sonnet increases their rates without notice, which is a common tactic for low-cost insurance companies. Though these Insureye reviews are about Sonnet’s home insurance, it’s safe to assume this could happen for any of their insurance types.
Everything is done online
Though this could sound like a pro for people who prefer to do things from the comfort of their home, an online insurance company can be difficult to deal with, especially when an emergency hits. Complicated claims will take multiple calls, meaning you’ll have to talk to a new customer service agent each time.
Not the cheapest company we looked at
Despite being an online-only insurance company, Sonnet still didn’t give us the cheapest quotes out of the 4 companies. If you were to compare these companies based solely on price, you may want to look somewhere else.

FAQ
What does Sonnet pet insurance cover?
Sonnet pet insurance hits most of the major things that are usually covered by this type of insurance. That includes surgery, accidents, illnesses, dental, examinations, and more. Just note that Sonnet does not cover prescription food, which is offered by other companies. Learn more about what Sonnet covers here.
Is pet insurance worth it?
If you feel better having pet insurance, then it can be worth it for your peace of mind. Just remember that pet insurance, like most insurance, has a lot of exceptions – so you may find yourself in an emergency situation you thought was covered, but find out you have no coverage at all. Some people recommend simply starting a separate savings account instead of getting pet insurance, since your money is much more accessible that way.
How much is pet insurance?
The price of pet insurance depends on your pet’s breed, gender, age, and more. Out of the 4 companies we surveyed using 2 specific situations, we got an average quote of $18.84 for a 5 year old female ragdoll, and $28.80 for a 5 year old male golden retriever. Check out our comparison of 4 different pet insurance companies here.
