Your home is important to you, so you want to make sure your home insurance company will be there for you when you need them. The Co-operators provides quality home insurance with consistently high satisfaction ratings. Their network of financial advisors is backed by over 5,000 employees, making them one of the leaders in Canadian property insurance.

The Co-Operators was established in 1945 as an association of farmers. They’re 100% Canadian and are, as the name suggests, a co-operative company owned by their members. As of 2019, they had 5.5% of the Canadian property/casualty insurance market, the 5th largest in Canada. They offer a wide range of insurance products including property, business, farm, and life insurance, and are a large player in the group insurance market.

The Co-operators home insurance product rating: 4.2 stars

The Co-operators plans have some nice features not typically included in home insurance coverage. These include (in their Prestige package) accidents like spilling paint on your carpet. They also insure against identity fraud. If you have a home-based business, it’s easy to add business insurance to your home insurance policy.

On the downside, their policies don’t pay for additional living expenses, so if you’re forced out of your home due to damage, you’re on your own.

Rating methodology

To calculate our Genius Ratings, we compare the features of the account or product in question with other similar products in Canada. We give each feature a score out of 5 based on that comparison. Once we’ve rated all the features, we run them through our proprietary algorithm to produce a final rating out of 5.

The pros of The Co-operators home insurance

What does The Co-operators Home Insurance have going for it?

Pros

pro High satisfaction rating

In 2019, J. D. Power did a study to see how satisfied customers were with their home insurance company. Co-operators ranked 1st Ontario/Atlantic region and 2nd in the Western region.

pro 24/7 claims service

In case you need it, it’s comforting to know that Co-operators provides a 24/7 claims hotline. They have their own team of claim experts to quickly assess and respond to your emergency.

pro Innovative features

Even though they’re a company with a long history, Co-operators home insurance has some modern features which set it apart from the competition. For example, your home insurance policy covers the growing risk of identity fraud. You can also purchase coverage so that in the event of a claim you can use environmentally friendly materials.

pro Many ways to save on your premiums

The Co-Operators clearly outlines ways you can save on your home insurance premiums on their website. For example, you could save money by having automatic fire sprinklers or multiple products with them.

The cons of The Co-operators home insurance

What’s not so good about The Co-operators?

Cons

con Potentially higher rates

Compared to other companies, the premiums for The Co-operators Home Insurance seem high. For example, I got a quote of $2,191 for an annual premium on home insurance from Sonnet but at The Co-operators it was $2,769.

con Policies don’t include additional living expenses

Many home insurance companies will cover your hotel room, transportation, and food costs in the event that you have nowhere to live due to damage to your home. This coverage isn’t included with The Co-Operators, which would’ve been nice to see.

Co-Operators Cancellation Insurance is a JOKE>
I purchased Cancellation Insurance - but given I got sick - which is why I bought the insurance I was denied my claim. There reason was that getting COVID did not qualify as they had a one sentence in the policy which said they did not honour the policy if you got sick due to a Pandemic. At the time of my claim - the Province had stated that the official status of the Province being in a Pandemic lock down was over. They are taking our money and refusing to pay within the intent of one purchasing the policy. Avoid their Cancellation Insurance as they will find any excuse to deny.

Stretched thinner and thinner
I've been with the Co-operators for 4+ decades and regardless of the fact that I've not made a single claim. My home insurance goes up every year and for the past 6 years I've called to inquire as to why! I'm told its because of climate change and fraudulent claims. I do not live on the flood plans and my property is well maintained and again I've not made a claim ever. So why should the average joe continually be penalized? Thanks Co-Operates, for sticking it too my wallet. Stretched thin

the worst experience
it is the worst insurance company, it is a company that does not help the client when they need it, they do not say things clearly and bad communication, absolutely everything wrong, if you have to choose an insurance company it will be a bad choice

When Cooperators wanted to "inspect" one of our homes they "sent" a "professional" to do that. But that "professional" merely called to ask questions then requested photos & did not actually go to the premises. We duly sent photos and she forwarded a report to the Cooperators who then gave us a list of what they wanted "repaired," including a roof replacement. At the time we had serious issues taking precedence: a dying parent, upcoming surgery, and Covid. They gave us a year to comply but Covid continues and now they've sent a letter to say they're not renewing the coverage. We're claim and mortgage free and have had 4 policies with Cooperators for 2 decades OMG
