Costco has the most amazing return policy in the history of return policies. They’ll allow you to return practically anything, for almost any reason, with no time limit on when you can make the return. Costco will even refund your membership if you’re not satisfied.

To sweeten the deal, Costco will accept returns without a receipt, and you don’t need the original packaging either – as long as they can verify it’s a Costco product.

There are only a few (very) reasonable exceptions for merchandise. We cover each of these in detail below.

Costco electronics return policy

Costco has an impressive selection of electronics, including speakers, TVs, appliances, and more. So what happens when you get home and decide you don’t want or need the item anymore?

Costco allows returns on electronics for up to 90 days from purchase, including these items and more:

  • Ovens
  • Washing machines
  • Dryers
  • Refrigerators

Another lesser-known perk for Costco members is free technical support. They answer questions related to your electronics, whether you need help setting up your computer, troubleshooting a problem, or getting warranty information.

Costco return policy on groceries and food items

There is no specific return policy for groceries but these purchases still fall under Costco's policy on returning merchandise and therefore can be returned for a full refund. This includes packed and prepared foods, so that delightfully cheap roast chicken you picked up for dinner can be returned without issue if you discover it's not cooked properly.

Despite the lack of restrictions of this policy, it's still important to keep a few things in mind:

  • Costco prefers that you return items in their original packaging, so do your best to keep track of this.
  • It's preferred that you have at least 50% of the item left to show them upon return.
  • Having the original receipt is also preferred, especially if the item has a "best before" date that's relevant to your return. Still, this isn't 100% necessary since you have a membership and Costco has records of your purchases anyway.

Returning mattresses at Costco

Mattresses also fall under Costco's general, generous return policy, so you can return this item for a full refund if you're not satisfied. If you've had and used the mattress for a while, or if it's in poor condition, you may want to contact customer service to ensure the return will be accepted before you haul the item to the warehouse.

If you made the purchase online, you can schedule a pickup and return the mattress that way. Simply head to the Costco site, fill out the required information for a return, and wait to be contacted by a representative to schedule a pickup appointment.

Costco return policy for alcohol and tobacco

Costco return policy states that they will not accept alcohol or cigarette returns where prohibited by law, meaning that, unless the provincial law restricts it, you can usually return these substances to Costco.

Costco liquor stores are only in select provinces. Returns can typically be made if the alcohol is in resalable condition, you have your receipt, and it’s returned within a reasonable time frame.

The Costco return policy for jewellery and diamonds

Diamond jewellery can be returned for a full refund, but there is a process involved for 1.00 ct diamonds or larger. In these cases, the gem and your paperwork must be inspected and verified.

A Costco Graduate Gemologist will inspect your item(s) for authenticity, and this can take 2 to 5 days. You may also need to present the certification you received at the time of purchase. Your refund will be processed once the verification process is complete.

Costco’s return policy for tires and car batteries

Car batteries and tires are examples of products with a limited useful life expectancy, meaning they won’t last forever. For this reason, these products are sold with specific warranties:

  • Tires come with a manufacturer’s warranty, a mileage warranty, and a road-hazard warranty.
  • Costco car battery warranties vary by product and depend on the lifespan of the battery. For example, the Kirkland Signature Automotive (flooded battery) is eligible for a free replacement if it falls within a certain timeframe (4 years).

However, if tires or a battery haven’t been used or installed on your vehicle, they can be returned just like any other item at Costco.

My $1,000 Costco return

When preparing for our recent move, my family and I realized that we'd accumulated plenty of things from Costco that had either broken or weren’t quite right. The frustrations of packing and the cost of moving expenses finally motivated me to dig up the receipts and make those returns.

Here are a few examples of the items we'd purchased and eventually returned to Costco:

  • Exercise bike: The resistance on the bike went down significantly and fairly soon after purchase. Didn't return it until 2 years later, but still received a full refund.
  • Bicycle: Returned, completely unused and with tags still on it, several years later for a full refund.
  • Fruit stand: We kept this (and tried to like it) for a few years and eventually returned it for a full refund.
  • Cushioned floor mats: We purchased several more than we needed and had no problem returning them for a full refund.
  • Snorkel kit: An impulse purchase that we never used and received a full refund upon returning it (still in its original packaging).
  • Towel holder: We never got around to installing it and then moved to a new house, so we returned it for a full refund.
  • Frying pans: They were supposed to be professional grade but warped quickly. A full refund was issued without any problem.

Costco return policy horror stories

You might think the long list of returned items (above) is crazy, but my experience is tame compared to the stories you'll read online. Some people will shamelessly return used and abused items and then walk out of the store with a brand-new replacement.

10-year-old TV Costco changed its policy so old electronics can’t be returned for a full refund, allowing people to upgrade to the latest technology at no cost. Still, one man returned a 10-year-old TV because he figured he was "grandfathered in" under the old policy.

Electronics One man purchased a GPS for a road trip and then returned it when he returned home again. Other customers purchase big-screen TVs for a Super Bowl party or similar event and then return them shortly afterward.
Plants Some customers purchase plants, bring them home, and put them in the ground… only to dig them back up at a later date and return them.

Does Costco ever reject returns?

If you don't have a receipt and the customer service department can't find a record of the purchase under your account, your Costco return will likely be rejected.

There are also stories on Reddit of people trying to return items that are quite obviously old and overused, and their attempts are rejected.

Based on this, it's clear that some things are left up to the discretion of the Costco representative. For the most part, though, representatives are very generous with the condition of the items they accept as returns.

Love Costco for their return policy, but it irritates me that people abuse it. Most of my returns have been unused items in their original packaging i.e. items that don't fit, or items that we didn't end up needing, usually within a few weeks or months of purchase. Occasionally items that are defective get returned; electric toothbrushes that gave up after one year, and now we're trying to return a couch that just.. broke. Overall, Costco's psychology trick works wonders on me - I buy everything without worry - and they have probably made several thousands in profit as a result.

Costco's return and price matching (adjustment) policy can be very YMMV. One location which refused to allow anyone but an elderly person or someone with a visible physical disability to enter their store during the special times. during the pandemic. Oddly, this Costco location refuses to do a price adjustment on an item in stock UNLESS your have your receipt with you. WIth other locations, the membership desk will go into your membership profile and find the item, print it out on a piece of paper and do your adjustment. It's really easy, peasy. But this Richmond BC location won't. This location also refused to allow one to exchange a set of wiper blades which were the wrong size with another. They insisted you return the item and then buy it despite the fact the item was purchased when on sale. Then there's another horror story too where people are flagged and then black-listed because they've returned too many items. On another thing too. WIth the Costco Executive membership, the 2% doesn't apply to gasoline purchases while it does for the regular Costco Capital One card. The blog above says the MBNA World Elite Mastercard is a Costco Credit card. It is NOT. Costco Capital One credit card is. There's a heckuva lot of ads and banners on this site, you have to be very careful and remain skeptical with all and any info posted here.

Hello, Sure, Costco returns can be handled differently depending on the store you visit however they still have a very generous return policy because of their corporate return policy that should cover all stores. Getting used to how your local Costco handles returns could be helpful to make sure you have everything you need to make your return. Though it isn't branded as a Costco credit card, we mentioned the BMO Air Miles WEM because it will give you a better return (around 2.12%) on your purchases. Basically all Mastercards are accepted by Costco, branded or not (like MBNA World Elite Mastercard with a return rate of around 2% though in fact it's not mentioned in the above article). I'm in Canada, but I think Costco is basically the same on either side of the border. Most of the stuff I've returned to Costco has been without a receipt. I was even able to return stuff I bought at a US Costco to a Canadian Costco without a receipt. I wouldn't have argued if they told me it wasn't possible, I just thought I'd try since the "universal" seat covers didn't fit in my car.

Okay I have a question.... we returned a computer we bought a year ago (it was defective and their concierge service let us return it) for about $1000. Since we have the Costco Visa card we get like 2% back on purchases. So do they retroactively take back the $20 in rewards we gained last year from the computer purchase? Technically we've already spent it but I guess they could take it back from the current year's accumulated rewards. I can't find anywhere that can answer this question though.

My experience been very unexceptional 7 hours long ... with great Help from Mr Riley professionalisms... still at the end of the day no answers .. exchange tv .. then exchanged tv ... possibly gave me floor model.. discontinued,,, and really staff was saying as leaving the store they could of return that tv ... this the worst store to store to come to Cumberland Ga ... ????? the front end Manager Riley was really tryn to help ????? everyone else was acting like I did something wrong including their warehouse manager John turner very fascist ... argumentative and rude ,?????? then general manger ... didn’t really help either ... it’s all about numbers and making them look ? good

Just want to throw out there that I had a similar exp w/ Canadian Tire. It was over a stupid thing- a garden hose nozzle I paid about $15.00 or so for. Bought it last summer, and kept it in the shed. This spring I went to use it (almost a year after purchase) the handle snapped off. I said, 'WTH, let's see what happens...' No reciept, no packaging.. they confirmed my purchase by searching my debit card and gave me $ refund. I'm still open mouthed about it. CANADIAN TIRE??? Awesome.

I purchased a recliner just over 3 years ago. In thr past year I've had to tighten the footrest to the point where the holes have worn down too much. One of the main springs under the seat has popped out. One of the arms is loose. And there is some pretty ugly deterioration of the top grain leather. All this despite fairly infrequent use (pretty much only on weekends). It's all about the product and how long you expect it to last. Would I return a sock after 3 years because it's got a hole in it? No way. We have furniture in our home that is decades old, so this recliner is going back.

I love shopping at Costco. I have returned many items, including electronics, just because I did not like it. They have returned each one of it. But there are often long lines for returns. It takes a lot of time, minimum 15 min to 30 mins. So reach on a weekday early. But their choice of items are very poor. Maximum two or three choices. Even food and cleaning chemicals, I found the price same as walmart or similar store which has five times more choices. Most food items purchased are large quantities which eventually perish as I have a small family. If you spend 250 bucks or more each month, then their upper level membership fees are worth it. Weekend crowds are crazy in store and at the parking lot. I have checked out many stores in Toronto. Each store has many items that are unique to that store.

I have an espresso machine i ordered online from Costco, about 25 days ago. Last week the on off button got jammed in. So it now does not turn off unless you unplug it. I want to return it, but knowing they only sell it online, i'm still using it this week first. The problem is that I bought it for 229, now it's 299. They don't put the model on it, so i don't know if it's now a newer model. So I can return it in store, but how does the replacement work? Am i stuck now paying 299 for a new one? I can't seem to find these answers on their website, so hoping someone has the experience here. :)

I bought a 65 inch tv. While setting it up, my wife tripped and dropped it, damaging the casing. Although it seems to work just fine, it appears the screen could eventually become detached. At any rate, I called Costco customer service and explained exactly what happened, that the damage was caused by us. They assured us we could return it as long as it was within 90 days. So this brings up an interesting dilemma. If feels odd to take it back, but on the other hand Costco could have written its return policy to easily exclude damage caused by the customer, but it didn't. I'm not trying to hoodwink anyone, and, in fact, could easily return it and claim the damage was caused elsewhere. So it seems as though Costco's policy is meant to protect clumsy customers from themselves. Seems like a great way to retain customer loyalty.

I bought a carpet steam cleaner at Costco. Used it a couple of times, realized it wasn't worth holding onto, and returned within a month. I've known Costco's that don't let you return unopened food even if they didn't expire. My local one also wouldn't give me a price adjustment in the form of a gift card for something that went on sale for $40 less within 2 weeks of when I bought it. They told me I would have to return it first, rather to have them just give me a credit. That pissed me off.

For about 5 years I buy a prelim Christmas tree and then return it after the holiday. Each year I check with the manager first and am told it is no problem. I do not feel guilty after all I spend thousands of dollars there and there return policy builds loyalty; like Nordstrom used to be. Home Depot is also good for "renting" power equipment......

I have been reading all these comments ... WOW people. Ok I shop there and have been since I could get in early for my membership before everyone could. They change there policy (electronics ) because yes people as they usually do take advantage. They track your returns , hence you dont need a receipt and can see if you are abusing. I would not take something back if it was not broken. Today someone returned a toilet... used and smelly and the employee didnt even want to check the box... ahh general public

Costco has the greatest return policy - that's why when I need to buy something I always go to their site to check if they offer it. I still remember when they didn't have the 90-day return policy on electronics, but I guess lots of people were abusing it, and they had to change it. Still if you buy a product and it breaks in a few months or a year you don't have to deal with company's customer service to get it repaired (if you are lucky to still be in warranty), instead you just drop it at one of the Costco's warehouses and you are done.

I really think a lot of this is taking advantage and therefore unethical. I'm fairly sure that the store's return policy was never meant to be a warranty substitute. A half-eaten box of oranges? Clearly, many of you have never run your own business, because if you did, you'd understand what this does to the bottom line. Can Costco afford it financially? Yes. Does Costco account for it on their balance sheet? Yes. But that doesn't make it right. The fact that this article was written suggests to me that deep down, people are questioning the behaviour, which is the only thing here that gives me hope.
