Quicken Canada Deluxe product rating: 4.6 stars

Quicken software was first developed for DOS in 1984, but its current list of convenient features keeps it competitive with many of the newer, more flashy budgeting apps. Quicken (Deluxe)'s fees aren't exactly cheap, but they're on the same level as other subscription-based platforms.

Unlike most competitors, though, Quicken (Deluxe)'s default is to store data locally (on your computer), rather than in the cloud. This can be a big selling point for anyone concerned with security breaches.

Rating methodology

To evaluate budgeting software, we analyze 10+ data points to generate a trustworthy Genius Rating. We consider all aspects of budgeting software, including fees, extra perks, goal tracking, access to bill payment, customer satisfaction, and free trial length, to assess its overall value. Then, the budgeting software’s features are rated based on how they stack up against other available options.

Quicken (Deluxe) pros

Let’s go over some of the strengths of this budgeting app:

Pros

pro Easily customizable budgets

Quicken (Deluxe) allows you to create multiple, separate monthly budget plans, making it a convenient platform to share with family members. It also offers options for adding savings goals, automatic suggestions based on past spending, and rollover budgeting to help with over- or underspending.

proWide, convenient accessibility

Users can access their Quicken (Deluxe) budget information across desktop, web, and mobile platforms, which means online and offline access are both available. This allows you to track your spending and keep up to date with your finances, no matter where you are or how you feel about internet safety.

proData access guarantee

If you decide to end your Quicken (Deluxe) subscription at any time, you're guaranteed to still have access to and ownership of your data. This is mostly due to the fact that all data is stored on your computer (unless you specify otherwise). While this should be the default for all of these sorts of applications, it’s not, so hats off to Quicken (Deluxe).

proFree customer support

Quicken (Deluxe) offers free phone and chat support for subscribers, and users report that support staff are both polite and helpful. There's also an extensive library of user guides and tutorials, plus a community forum. If you want even more, you can upgrade to Quicken Home & Business for priority access to support agents.

pro30-day money-back guarantee

Anyone can try Quicken (Deluxe) for 30 days, risk-free. You're entitled to a full refund if you decide you don’t want to continue using their software after this first month. While this isn't technically a free trial, it's the same concept and offers a valuable opportunity to see if this platform works for you.

Quicken (Deluxe) cons

These are the areas where Quicken (Deluxe) needs some work:

Cons

con No free version

There's no free version of Quicken (Deluxe) available, not as a free trial or a base tier. Yes, it does offer a money-back guarantee and has a low-priced base tier, but this isn't quite the same thing. Many Canadians prefer trying a product out before committing to a monthly or annual cost, and most budget software offers a basic free tier, too.

conLacking bill payment feature

Yes, Quicken (Deluxe) has its Classic Bill Manager feature, but as handy as this is, it doesn't schedule automatic payments. It manages your bills, sends reminders, and allows you to pay via Quicken rather than pay via your bank account or credit card, but you're still responsible for manually paying the bills each month.

conDifferences between Windows and Mac

If you’re using a Mac, take a close look at the software’s feature list – some tools available on Windows aren’t included in the Mac version. For instance, creating custom savings goals is only available for Windows users, which means budgeting for these savings goals is also unavailable on Macs.

Quicken (Deluxe) alternatives

While Quicken has been around for years and is a well known and trusted application, it does have some pretty stiff modern competition.

Eternal Frustration with Quicken Canada
The software itself is actually pretty good… That is after many years of having been abandoned. It's the support that sucks. I had trouble logging onto my account from outside of the country (some of us actually do travel in the jet age) and I was told that it is only for use within the US and Canada, as if secure logons cannot be made from other places on the planet.... this is very frustrating.

Minimize the annual fee
Easy To Use
While the annual fee is disappointing, so too is the lack of incentives for new subscribers. In contrast, the US version often advertises introductory pricing. To avoid the annual fee, I simply let the subscription expire after a year. At that point it, most features continue to function. The disabled portions include a) no auto-download of bank or broker transactions or stock prices, b) no software updates, and c) wasted screen space advertising subscription expiration.

Underwhelming for such a mature product
Easy To Use
I am a longtime Quicken user (since 1995) and the lack of development over the years is disappointing. I use it to track all of my expenses, assets, investments and net worth. It's capability for this is virtually unchanged over the nearly 30 years I have used it. Most of the changes released over the past 30 years are bug fixes and cosmetics. It does a great job of tracking and categorizing costs and a reasonable job of tracking/managing investments. I do not use it's budgeting features where they have probably spent most of their time. I keep waiting for Quicken to take the product to another level but am really hoping a viable alternative gets built.

The worst software for Canadians
Absolutely attrocious piece of software. Will register Canadian accounts in USD and not allow you to change it without workarounds that may or may not work. No support. No indication of how bad this is for Canadian customers. I would give it 0 stars if possible.

Terrible .Set up and use is too complex. Now to cancel it they will charge another fee of 39. 99. I think that is ludicrous
Set up of the account is too complex. I do not need it. Now to cancel it they will charge another 39.99.That is a terrible rip off but they say it’s policy.
