Did ODSP increase in 2024?

Will ODSP increase in 2025?

It’s possible – but not guaranteed – that ODSP will increase again in 2025.

ODSP increases have been tied to the rate of inflation since July 2023, and the province’s public plans from 2023-2024 state that future increases will be tied to inflation. However, the provincial budget released in March 2024 didn't indicate further funding for ODSP or Ontario Works.

Did ODSP increase in 2023?

Yes, ODSP increased 6.5% in July 2023, raising the payment amount to $1,308 for a single person.

Here’s how the increase impacted payments for basic needs and shelter in 2023 and 2024:

Type of familyMaximum 2023 paymentMaximum 2024 payment
Single$1,308$1,368
Couple (no children)$1,960$2,049
Couple with 2 children$2,379.82$2,208
Couple (where both spouses are disabled)Capped at $2,205Capped at $2,305

What causes ODSP increases?

ODSP increases occur when politicians respond to pressure to align payments with the cost of living. For years, ODSP recipients have said that payments are too low to cover essential expenses.

In 2022, the provincial election campaign included a proposal to raise ODSP rates. It was backed by the Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP), the Ontario Liberal Party, and the Green Party of Ontario.

When the Progressive Conservative of Ontario Party was elected, it committed to an initial 5% bump with annual increases tied to inflation.

The fault lies with the NDP and LIBEtyRAL government who for at least 10 YEARS refused to increase ODSP!!!! I agree that to get a person on ODSP to the poverty level ODSP should be doubled .At least that would be a step in the right direction!!!!

Ow should be at least 1300, odsp should be at least 2000 and even that is not enough to get by. The government should have guaranteed jobs remotely or something for odsp and ow recipients to make extra income but they won't. They want people to suffer. There's activists and musicians named Tom macdonald and zen starwalker who talk about all this kind of stuff with passion

I am 61 years old and worked for 45 years at very physical jobs. I have never felt so low in my life trying to survive with dignity on ODSP and CPP DISABILITY. After rent, bills are barely paid I can't even afford basic food for a week, never mind the month. I am Diabetic and can't afford to eat healthy so of course my sugars are out of control. I had a HA a few years back and my health has gone to craps. I was 112lbs most of my life and now down to 96. It's a freaking Disgrace that I can't even take my Grandsons out for a lunch . Not having $5 left in my pocket. It's depressing to not have a penny in your pocket to be able to even have a so called life anymore. This is why mental health increases. I am only surviving because I have Amazing siblings that help through the month. I feel like a complete POS having to rely on others after all those years of working my ass off. I've never asked anyone for help in my past. Government is a complete failure to seniors and disabled people who are treated like we are below human. My thoughts are to give extra payments in the middle of the month to help us make it to the end of it. They keep raising baby bonus that just that alone is more than ODSP live on. It's obvious that Government couldn't care less if we lived or died today. But guess what? My children do. My Grandsons do. My Family does. My friends do. Even neighbors do. It's about time that Government cares how it feels to be starving all month. How our rights matter. How depression feels. How we watch millions and millions of dollars go to other countries and Corporate organizations well Canadians suffer. Maybe one day in hell Government might actually have some morals and respect us as Human Beings.

Very true. I have same situation cpp disability and odsp . If cpp disability increases the odsp cuts that amount so basically I don't get extra being on both . You only get the odsp rate which is not enough.

It all boils down to G-R-E-E-D No one in a position of power cares about what we "povvies" go through. There's "no profit" or benefit for helping the poor. My brothers think Workhouses should be brought back, force people to work. "Saftey Net" is a crutch & the well offs & the wealthy have to pay for the "povvies" because they aren't educated or smart or sophisticated...snobs to the max.

I have been in a wheelchair for years. And I can't work. I really like to find a job. But no one gives me a job. Costs and inflation are deadly. Contains; house rent, telephone, internet, grocery, transportation cost, Clothes and shoes... During elections, all politicians just lie. My entire monthly income doesn't make a meal of Dogford steak with his friends. My height is 180 cm, my weight with a wheelchair is less than the weight of Dagford's stomach

Odsp is very frustrating!! Try living on a single portion for 2 people!! I can’t get my wife on my Odsp because she doesn’t have status! She can’t get that STATUS until she files 500 plus 255 to get the ball moving and get work visa! It’s a catch 22! The government allows you to sponsor your spouse but it doesn’t give you the resources to do it! If anyone has any ideas please let me know through my email! Thank you

I think that ODSP is being stingy and in Doug Ford's case he is in violation of undermining our human rights and the charter that this country has had in place for 75 plus years. How can anyone pay rent in these times nevermind utilities and basic amenities and still keep your head above water. The vulnerable population is in constant danger of being homeless and hungry every month. Something needs to change what happened to the $ 2000 basic living system that all the political parties were talking about during last election , that would help the less fortunate and vulnerable live with some standard of dignity.

Martha

Please do raise the ODSP at least to double amount from what we get now. It is impossible to live on for those of us with no other income. The cheapest rent for a 1 bedroom appt is 1375 dollars. Bill payments alone 400 or more and need money for food at least 400 dollars. Need to buy personal items and have a cat that need to be fed. We would need at least 3000 dollars with the cost of food and rent prices, just to live on basics and get by. I am on the verge of nervous breakdown as the lowest rent price I can find for a one bedroom rent is 1370 dollars plus utilities. Internet, phone, hydro and heating. No future, no hope and feel so hopeless and not want to live anymore. The amount I get now only covers that and need to eat as well and live and pay bills.. Thank you.

I don't even get close to the maximum for a single person, I get about a thousand and after bills, rent, ect I have maybe a hundred left due to being ultra frugal. It's clear the Ford government at this point wants to kill all of the poor and unfortunate people off and he should be charged with TREASON against the Canadian people.

I think what a couples get should be for single person $2,300 an couples should get $3,400 an couples with 2 kids should be $ 4,500 since cost living is expensive.

I agree! Right now in kingston where I live, the cheapest bachelor is 1300, 1 bedroom 1600, 2 bedroom 2200, etc.. that's on top of no one at those rates wanting to rent to "welfare bums and odsp bums". Which is what working people call us all, even though ibworked hard my whole life til I became disabled. Pretty sad.

I think the increase of 6.5% is a joke and an insult to Canadians. When rent is Atleast $1450 month , then utiles, your phone, internet , forget about buying food or clothes,or shampoo any necessities of life, because you can’t afford it. And if you have a health condition you can’t go to the Food Bank as it’s All processed, canned . Who thinks up these cost of living/inflation amounts to feel they are doing us a great deed favour. Maybe Doug Ford, and the others should live off $1,200-1,308 a month and see if they can survive and eat. Like SERIOUSLY!! Where are politians BRAINS.

This is fantastic getting a small raise although what is going to happen in October when minimum wage goes up and everything else goes up with it… Will there be another raise in November to cover these costs??? It blows my mind that people think minimum wage going up helps them Because everything they buy ends up going up to cover the cost of their wage hike

I would like to know if people on oh DSP are allowed to make up to $1000 before deduction why I am not able to use my CPP disability pension towards that $1000!? I have tried being hired but due to liability places will not hire a blind person And I also was not eligible to go back to school to learn anything due to the fact of my age as well as I have been out of work for too many years… Something needs to change drastically with this system!!! I believe everyone that has worked before should not have their Canada Pension Plan disability deducted from the Ontario disability amount… Thank you and hopefully someone will listen… Michelle

They wonder why mental health is on the rise. How is it not possible not to get depressed, if you have to worry if you can pay rent. Feed your family etc. the government needs to get off their asses, I’m 54 years old and live with my parents that’s all I can afford, times are tough and they are only going to get worse

NO individual can survive on $1200 a month.! Minimum wage is more then double and those people barely surviving, how can they expect us to survive then??? There will be more homeless if something is not done ASAP.! Please provide affordable housing for ODSP recipients.! If government would pay for our housing and give us $1200 a month then maybe we can survive and have our dignity back.!? Or simply give politicians $1200 a month let’s see if they could survive on that and for how long? Maybe then something will be done???

we all will be. they dont think of mental health in people when these inflations happen, they think of how they can line their pockets. tent cities are even allowed in some cities, so homeless really have no where to go, unless its under a bridge thats already packed full... this is all gonna turn into an outrage and i can see damage happening in the near future

Odsp is a joke does it need to be raised well question is how many people can honestly say they can comfortably live on 1200$ a month. Awnser is no one, yes one may survive off that amount but thats it and thats just barely survive you still have to spend 3 out of 7 days of the week starving and thats if you dont have outher expenses phone internet then if you have a service animal you can only get a measly 80$ a month to help with expenses well my dog at 115$ bag of food and just under 300$ vet checkup every 6 months runs me still under what i need for expenses. I do believe it was the federal goverment that stated back in the time of CERB at the begining of covid that individuals NEEDED 2000$ a month to live so why does someone with disabilaty need 800$ less then that if anything we need 800$ more then that to help with medical expenses ontop of being able to live... FORDS GOTTA GO just like any outher ford he has ran his miles and broke down

ODSP is ridiculous. You get penalized when yours couple ( no children) and the one without the disability gets injured on the job and has to go on wsib. Then they take 100% off. And I don't understand about this so called increase my husband who has brain cancer gets a basic needs amount is 1018.00 not 1228 like they say it is.

Totally agree with you on the guide dog allowance! Absolutely crazy what it costs to keep a service dog for years all I got was $64 and thankfully it's up to $80 now but still nowhere near enough… It cost $85 just to walk through the door of a veterinary clinic and his dog food has doubled in the past year😔

I currently am on disability as well it certainly better than being on social services (welfare) but to be honest it's not much different it's still really hard to get by on ODSP I don't get that much either I get $1,100 and that's the maximum.

I don’t know why the government keeps saying that people on ODSP make 1228 a month we do not we make $706 for a living allowance the other $497.is a maximum they will pay towards a rent if you are living in a low income place like I am paying 140 I do not see the balance of that money. I get $845.

Trust me, ODSP won't cover the rent and food as rent costs more than $1300. Go to change.org (in search tab with the magnifying glass icon, type in increase ODSP and they will list a whole ton of petitions) where you can petition the Ford government as well as other governments to demand for change. You can also appear anonymous if you want to although you will have to donate a small amount of money (i.e. $9 which is a one time fee) and it might make it to the media and perhaps be a victory if Trudeau and Ford decide to do something about it. The more people sign, the more it will attract the attention of the governments.

OW and ODSP Rates and the OCB as of September 2022 September 27, 2022 Ok, this is great and all, Odsp definitely needed the increase...but so do the people on Ow. True the purpose of Ow is to help till a job can be found, but when you work you're butt off job searching and going for interviews and the result is, you don't get hired anywhere, what are people on Ow to do? Choose between eating and paying rent? Choose between paying rent or utilities? With the cost of everything going up, the Ow people have next to no hope to be able to feed themselves let alone their families. Ow needs to increase as well, so that the people who get rejected from jobs can still make ends meat. Please think of the people on Ow too when increasing the assistance allowance. They need it too. Thank you and god bless.

First of all, I live on odsp in ontario, I DO NOT MAKE even a grand a month, so the 1228 bs is exactly that most of us don’t make that much on it, second of all once your bills are out of it you’re lucky if you can buy groceries or gas for your car. I’d love to see mini trump (ford) survive on 854 a month, cuz he wouldn’t, we were originally lined up by the liberals to have a set increase of 3% a year but thanks to mini trump who wiped it out immediately after entering office we’ve only gotten the one 5% increase which should have been 24% and my check only saw a 3% increase not a 5% so he owes us an additional 19% but the greedy prick won’t do it because he’s too busy looking after his own pocket and that of his 1% “friends” during the pandemic we got the best idea from him about how we were worth NOTHING as he made it clear EVERYONE ELSE was worth 2,000$ a month because that was considered “basic need” for them but we still sit below the poverty line by far, no extra assistance and prices keep skyrocketing and a “oh but you didn’t lose any income” from the jerks who follow this idiot, FORD and his followers are the ones making MAID look appealing. Odsp have already had to deal with enough bs without having to basically die of starvation because one prick can’t understand the value of lives that aren’t the 1%
