Desjardins is an insurance company based in Quebec that offers an array of different insurance types, including car insurance. While they have an array of options available that allow you to customize your insurance package to meet your own, personal needs, they only have insurance available to people living in select provinces.
If you live in one of these provinces, you’ll want to include Desjardins when comparison shopping for your next insurance policy. They have a number of ways to get discounts on your premiums, but not as many as some of their larger competitors. You may also find that their premiums are on the high side, when compared to some others.
Desjardins car insurance features
Here’s what Desjardins auto insurance has to offer.
- Perks for customers under age 25, including rebates and free roadside assistance
- Ajusto drive safe program rewards safe drivers with discounts
- Canadian citizen
- Age of majority
Desjardins car insurance rating: 4.7 stars
Desjardin offers a variety of coverage options that you can customize to create an auto insurance policy that suits the needs of most drivers.
On the other hand, Desjardins insurance is only available in a few provinces. It also came back with one of the highest quotes, and offers fewer discounts than some of the larger car insurance providers.
In the end, Desjardins auto insurance earned 4.7 stars, but that’s of no use to you if you live outside of their coverage range.
Rating methodology
To calculate our Genius Ratings, we compare the features of the account or product in question with other similar products in Canada. We give each feature a score out of 5 based on that comparison. Once we’ve rated all the features, we run them through our proprietary algorithm to produce a final rating out of 5.

The pros of Desjardins car insurance
Here’s what you can look forward to with Desjardins auto insurance.
Comprehensive coverage options available
Whatever type of car you’re driving, whether it’s an old second-hand beater you picked up for the winter, or the newest luxury sports car, Desjardins can likely put together an insurance package to meet your needs. When you ask them for a quote online, they’ll come back with a variety of options that you can then further customize as you require.
Save money with their optional safe driver program
Like other car insurance providers, Desjardins has a safe driving program you can opt-in to. With their Ajusto program, you install an app on your mobile device, which will then track your driving habits, including speed, acceleration, braking, cell phone distractions, and the like. If Ajusto reflects that you are a safe driver, you could save up to 25% on your car insurance premium after just 100 days.
Variety of other ways to save money
Desjardins offers a few other ways to save on your car insurance premiums, including if you bundle both your home and car insurance with them, if you use winter tires, if you insure multiple cars, and if you have an electric or hybrid vehicle. You can also get discounts for being a long-time Desjardin customer, or if you’re a student or recent graduate.
The cons of Desjardins car insurance
Of course, there are some drawbacks with Desjardins car insurance, as well.
Slightly higher than average premiums
When researching this article, we got car insurance quotes from a variety of providers, based on the same make and model of car, home address (in Ontario), and driver profile. Of those we surveyed, Desjardins came back with the highest quote. Your mileage may vary, of course, but be sure to get quotes from a number of different providers before making a final decision. It could save you hundreds of dollars over the course of a year.
Not available in all parts of Canada
Desjardins does not provide insurance for people in all parts of Canada. It's only available in Alberta, British Columbia, Nunavut, Northwest Territories, Ontario, Quebec, and Yukon. If you’re in any other part of Canada, you’re out of luck.
Fewer and lower discounts available
Desjardins doesn’t come close to offering the same level of discounts as those offered by some larger insurance providers, such as TD. If you’re a seasoned driver with a long claims-free driving history, chances are that you can get significantly better discounts with larger providers than you can with Desjardins.
Regular coverage doesn’t include gig-work
And, like other providers, Desjardins’ regular auto insurance coverage doesn’t cover you for gig-work, such as driving for one of the ridesharing or food delivery services. While there are add-ons for this, we like to point it out because a lot of people might not realize that they have to get special insurance coverage if they start to use their personal car for commercial purposes.

FAQ
Is Desjardins available everywhere in Canada?
Unfortunately, Desjardins only offers insurance to people living in certain provinces. If you’re living in any other part of Canada, you’re going to have to find a different insurance provider.
Does Desjardins auto insurance cover me for gig-work, like food delivery?
If you are a gig-worker driving for one of the ridesharing or food delivery services, chances are your auto insurance does not cover you for that. We strongly recommend that you contact your insurance provider before taking on one of these jobs to ensure that you have the insurance you need before you get started. Commercial vehicle insurance is often required, so it’s a good idea to double-check before you get started.
Are there ways to save money with Desjardins car insurance?
Desjardins offers a few ways to save money on your car insurance premiums, including an optional safe driving program, bundle discounts, and student discounts. You can read more about those cost saving options here.
