Are you an RBC member and looking to initiate a direct deposit or set up pre-authorized debits? You’ll need a RBC void cheque.
As RBC is the largest and most popular bank in Canada, many people, especially those who are getting their first paycheques, need to know how to get an RBC void cheque.
Along with their easy-to-use banking options and excellent credit card options, getting a void cheque is as easy as picking up a pen or doing a quick download of the RBC Direct Deposit Form.
So let’s dive right into it – here’s the 5 minute guide to getting a void cheque at RBC.
What is an RBC void cheque?
If you’re not familiar with the concept of a void cheque, we’ll quickly illustrate it for you.
A void cheque is essentially a blank cheque that can't be cashed in. This is useful because it has all of the information your employer needs to send your paycheque your way. Any pre-authorized debit transaction can happen with this as well, so you can pay for recurring things like bills and rent.
How this differs from a blank cheque is that you need to write the word “VOID” across it to ensure no one writes a dollar value on it and tries to cash it in.
Void cheques are more or less the same between different banks, so the process to get a void cheque from Tangerine would be pretty much the same.

How to read a void cheque from RBC
Technology is a wondrous thing. Instead of waiting for a cheque book to arrive, the same information is automatically generated in PDF format in seconds, no matter where in the country you are.
This information? It’s at the bottom of every RBC cheque. Here are what the numbers at the bottom of an RBC cheque mean:
- First comes the cheque number that identifies the specific cheque. This is not included in the RBC Direct Deposit Form.
- The 5-digit transit number on a cheque is the next number, and the first number on the online form. This number tells you the branch where you opened your account.
- The next 3 numbers are the financial institution number. For RBC, it’s 003.
- The last 7 numbers represent your account number. This can range from 7 digits (like RBC) up to 12.
