StudioTax product rating: 2.4 stars

StudioTax has been around since 2004, making it one of the pioneers of tax software in Canada. Its simple and old-fashioned app cuts straight to the point – offering you support for both simple and complex tax situations.

But if you’re used to modern app design, its outdated style may feel a bit cluttered to you. You also can only import prior year files from StudioTax, not any other tax program. Finally, support is only offered through email, which can involve some extended response time.

StudioTax did well when it came to giving you express NOAs, being offline, and being certified for Quebec users. It lost a bit of ground when it came to its lack of live support, plus the fact you have some restrictions when importing data from a prior year.

Rating methodology

We gave each feature in the table above a score out of 5 – comparing it to other tax software and also taking into consideration what it brings to the table for its users. Add that together, divide by the number of features tracked, and you have our star rating.

The pros of StudioTax

Here are some things we think you’ll like about StudioTax.

Pros

pro Offers an offline experience

One of the biggest draws to StudioTax is once you download the app on your computer or phone, the experience is offline. That means none of your information is stored online in the cloud – keeping it safe from information hacks and other security risks.

pro Available in all provinces, including Quebec

StudioTax is available in all Canadian provinces – including the sometimes-excluded Quebec. Just keep in mind that the Mac version of the app doesn’t have the Revenue Quebec certification.

pro Can handle both simple and complex tax situations

Most people have pretty simple tax situations which will be easily handled by StudioTax, but if you have rental or investment income – you’re taken care of too. There are a couple of restrictions, which they list out here.

pro Free tax software for certain individuals

If you don't want to worry about paying any kind of fee for your tax software, StudioTax has you covered if you make less than $20,000 a year or live in the territories.

The cons of StudioTax

Some things to be aware of about StudioTax.

Cons

con The outdated look could be confusing

If you’re used to the simple modern design adopted by most apps and websites these days, StudioTax’s outdated style may seem cluttered to you. This is something you can get used to, but may be off-putting at first.

con Limit of 20 returns

Though most people won’t have a problem with this, StudioTax does follow the 20 return per account restriction set in place by the CRA. If you’re a tax professional, check out StudioTax Enterprise for more information.

Rip off
Easy To Use
Studio tax works good at first. But it says you can do up to 20 returns. Not true. I havd been using them for years as I liked the program but after your 10th return, it starts causing problems where you havd to start returns over. Each time it counts as a new return. And u don't have the option to delete the replica return. So you end up having to buy another lucence after 10 returns

doesn't work with T4 Exempt CPP/QPP vs RL1 box 28
Can't send and can't print because it contains errors. I have two errors related to T4 Exempt CPP/QPP vs RL1 box 28. Same problem with T4 and REL1 from two different jobs with Exempt CPP/QPP. The T4 and REL1 for another job without Exempt works. I will have to go to an accountant. Loss of time and money.

Good off-line tax prep software. Both Mac and Windows compatible versions.
I have been using Studio Tax for at least 10 years and have always been satisfied. Although the interface may be a bit dated, the software doesn't take long to get used to. I appreciate the fact that the Studio Tax software is downloaded onto my own computer and all data entry and calculations are performed off-line. Also, if you just want to try Studio Tax out, you can download and use the software on your computer for free. It is not necessary to pay the $15 license fee until the point when you are ready to submit a completed tax return file to CRA.

Mediocre, hiccupy, but it runs on a Mac, and I'm used to it.
The only 'updating' to ST is yearly CRA compliance. The Mac interface is remains crude, text runs off the edge and view-change is often greyed-out. I haven't run this year's yet, but I'm sure the that stupid warning about the foreign/USA investment boxes will show up again at the very end. They never automated that choice. Also, free for $20k is not something they make it  e a s y  to take advantage of. So, I think they started inforcing $15 is not because they are doing a stellar improvements, but because they got tired of complying with CRA for free.

the worst i have seen and seemly you have to pay for it
i have used this for many years now they are charging for making over 20,000 a yeari make 22.000 so it seems like i can't use it ,to me it has got more confusing and NOT user friendly i filled it all out and i have no idea if it got too the Government ,it would be nice to see a message that if you want to send NETFILE you have to pay ,it's terrible i would advise not to use it but it's up too you ,who ever is in charge of it should be fired.
