How do stat holidays work?

Full-time employees are generally given stat holidays off with pay. If the stat holiday lands on a day off (Saturday or Sunday), the next regular working day is given off with pay.

Part-time employees are generally not entitled to stat holidays off but are paid a premium if they work on a stat holiday – normally, this is at least 1.5x their regular hourly rate of pay, although it varies by employment agreement.

If an employee’s agreement states they are entitled to "holiday pay," this is equal to a fraction (1/20) of the wages earned in the 4 weeks before the stat holiday.

Who do stat holidays apply to?

National stat holidays apply to everyone, and whether you get additional pay is dependent on the nature of your employment.

Salaried, full-time employees are generally given stat holidays off with pay. Part-time workers generally aren’t given stat holidays off but are paid a premium to work them.

There are 5 stat holidays that everyone in the country recognizes. In 2021, it was announced that the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was added to this list, but only federally regulated workplaces are obligated to take the day off.

The following is a list of nationwide stat holidays in Canada:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Good Friday
  • Canada Day
  • Labour Day
  • Christmas Day

Do you make extra for working on stat holidays?

If you're considered a part-time worker, either casual or term, you can earn more wages on stat holidays – a minimum of 1.5x regular pay (often called "time and a half").

What if the stat holiday falls on a weekend?

If the stat holiday is on a weekend, the following work day (Monday) is recognized as the stat holiday.

The same rules regarding payment apply even when the stat holiday falls on a weekend.

Hey John, Good question! This may depend on your province as well as whether you're an hourly or salary worker. I would look into checking your province's holiday guides (they're all linked above) for more information. Hope this helps!
