UFile is Canadian-made tax software that starts at $20.95 for individuals, though many people can actually use it for free. Students, newcomers, low-income earners (under $20,000), and anyone with a simple return can file without paying a cent, making it one of the more accessible paid tax solutions in Canada. For those who value privacy, UFile Windows is available for $22.99, allowing you to store your tax data locally instead of in the cloud.
Beyond affordability, UFile offers the core features most filers expect: express notice of assessment, prior-year data imports, and a unique triple accuracy guarantee that promises accurate results, the best refund, and customer satisfaction... or compensation if it falls short. While it doesn’t have a mobile app and expert help isn’t included, UFile’s mix of free filing options, accuracy protections, and the choice between cloud or offline storage makes it a practical option for many Canadians.

UFile product rating: 1.5 stars
As far as paid tax software goes, UFile checks almost everything on the list – with the exception of having a mobile app. Though there’s no free version (which would be great), there are plenty of people who can get it for free, including people with simple tax returns, students, newcomers, and low-income earners.
UFile gained points for having prior-year import options (though limited), plenty of free options, an accuracy guarantee with reimbursements, and the option for free telephone support. But the software took a hit when it came to not being completely free and not having an app.

The pros of UFile
What is there to like about this tax software?
Free in many cases
Despite the $20.95 price tag, there are many different groups of people who can take advantage of UFile completely free. The biggest group is people who have a simple tax return – which means you only have to file a single T4 and don’t have any special deductions (like medical expenses or charity donations). Other people who can use the software for free are students, first-time tax filers, or low-income earners (less than $20,000). Find out more here.
Triple accuracy guarantee
UFile’s triple guarantee ensures that your tax return will be accurate, you’ll be satisfied with the results, and they’ve given you the best result compared to other tax software. In each case, you could be eligible for a refund or recompensation. All the information is here if you’re interested.
Express notice of assessment
This is pretty well standard across tax software now, but it’s still nice to have an express NOA to get your tax assessment as soon as possible.
Available in Quebec
There are still some tax software out there that don’t work for Quebec residents – so this is a great perk.
Choice to store information offline
One of the most unique features of UFile is you essentially get the choice of where your information is stored. If your security and privacy is a top priority for you, opt for UFile Windows for a couple extra dollars and everything will be stored locally on your computer. Have trust in the cloud? Then UFile Online has everything you need for a bit cheaper. You can see more about the differences between the two here.
The cons of UFile
But what are some things you may want to keep an eye on?
Not free for everyone
Though there are many cases that UFile is free for, it's easy to fall out of the "simple tax return" pool and be faced with that $20.95 price tag. Even if you made a charity donation you'd like to claim, or had some medical expenses, your return is deemed too complicated for UFile free.
UFile Online uses cloud storage
Not comfortable with having your tax information stored on the cloud because of the threat of security breaches? You'll want to avoid UFile Online.
No chat support
Though UFile does offer free email and phone support, sometimes the easiest way is to popup that instant chat and get the answer you need in a few minutes. Unfortunately, UFile doesn't offer that support option.
No mobile app
If you don't have access to a computer or just want to get your taxes done on-the-go, there's no mobile app for you to download to streamline the experience.
Can no longer import tax files from TurboTax.
Although this was on offer previously, UFile has removed functionality allowing you to import your returns from TurboTax.
