The Outlook Financial High Interest Savings Account has a competitive interest rate, no monthly fees, and no minimum balance required. Plus, the benefits of working with a credit union can't be ignored.

This account used to be called the Implicity Financial High Rate Savings Account, but Implicity Financial merged under the Assiniboine Credit Union banner in mid-2022. When this merger occurred, the details of the savings account changed too. One of the biggest changes is that you're now limited to just one transaction per month, rather than unlimited.

Our rating for the Outlook Financial High Interest Savings Account: 3.6 stars

The Outlook Financial High Interest Savings account has a lot to offer, but it has certainly changed from the Implicity Financial account we used to know. The best part is the 1.85% interest rate, which makes up for a lot of previously enjoyed features.

This account is about what you'd expect from a high interest savings account from an online bank. The interest rate is worth sacrificing a few frills, including a welcome bonus and physical branch locations.

Rating methodology

To calculate our Genius Ratings, we compare the features of the account or product in question with other similar products in Canada. We give each feature a score out of 5 based on that comparison. Once we’ve rated all the features, we run them through our proprietary algorithm to produce a final rating out of 5.

What's good about the Outlook Financial High Interest Savings Account

Here's what the Outlook Financial HISA has going for it.

Pros

proThe interest rate is top notch

You'll earn 1.85% on every dollar in your Outlook Financial savings account, which is calculated daily and paid out monthly. While it's not the highest interest rate available for a Canadian savings account, it's still quite valuable. And it's significantly better than what most of the Big 5 Banks offer their customers.

proAll deposits are 100% guaranteed

While Outlook Financial isn't covered by the CDIC, all deposits are guaranteed by the Deposit Guarantee Corporation of Manitoba (DGCM), without limit. While they work on a smaller scale, the DGCM works with all credit unions and caisse populaires in Manitoba, essentially providing the same services and setting the same standards as the CDIC. It's in large part due to this corporation's guidance that no client funds were affected during the merger between Implicity Financial and Outlook Financial.

proDealing with a credit union can be refreshing

Outlook Financial is a division of Assiniboine Credit Union, which can be a nice change. Credit unions are non-profit organizations made up of members instead of clients or customers, and they pay any excess funds back to its members in various ways. Outlook Financial, as well as other credit unions, don't have as many branches or even financial products as typical banks, but the previously mentioned benefits can more than make up for this.

What to watch out for with the Outlook Financial High Interest Savings Account

There are a couple of minor drawbacks to an Outlook Financial high interest savings account.

Cons

conNo promotional rates or welcome offers

This may be due in part to its status as a credit union, but Outlook Financial doesn't offer any welcome bonuses or special interest rates with its savings accounts or any other of its products. Many smaller banks, including online-only banks, don't have special welcome offers either, but the big banks sure do. It's still something we'd like to see change.

conLimited to one free transaction per month

The point of a high interest savings account is to save, so it makes sense that Outlook Financial includes only one transaction with this account, but some competitors still offer more. If you think you'll need to move funds around more than once, whether it's writing a cheque, swiping a debit card, or something else – this account probably isn't the right one for you.
